I just had to tell you all about my exciting finds over the past few days.
I have a line of CHALLINOR in my family tree who were originally from Shocklach, Cheshire. So last Saturday I drove to the church in Shocklach - St Edith's - with my 3 children in tow. As we walked through the gate in the churchyard, there on my right were 4 Challenor/Challinor graves!!!!! I took photographs of all of them, transcribed the inscriptions and drove home again a very happy person :D :D
To make my good news even better, I have today had an email from the Cheshire RO who have very kindly done a quick search of the Shocklach Parish Registers (no fee charged :D) for me and found the baptism record of my GG Grandfather Richard Challenor. The parents names match those that I found on one of the gravestones, so I now have a photograph of my GGG Grandparents grave.
I am so excited at the moment..........I just cannot believe my luck ;D ;D

A very happy Rootschatter ;D :D ;)

A similar thing happened to me when to a Cemetery in Erith Kent armed with camera only to find their were over 4000 graves where do i look? I then had a feeling like some one was telling me something to go towards the chapel so i walked to the chapel and to my luck was the grave of my gr Gr grandfather and mother next to it was more family members i found 8 relevant gravestones almost all together would have taken me hours to look at every grave. It was like my gr gr grandfather was telling me where he was CREEPY.

No Jan that wasn't luck - it was meant to happen!!
Like Jim saying his family were telling him where they were - your family have waited all this time for somebody to take an interest!! ::)
How great for you!! I'm very happy for you!!
Annie ;)

Excellent news Jan - must have made your weekend!
cheers

Well done, Jan!
I really liked Annie's comment that your family had waited all this time for someone to take an interest. I had a similar experience recently in an Oxfordshire village called Duns Tew.
I was looking for my PREEDY family. I knew they had been in Oxfordshire during the 18th and 19th century, but had no reason to think there was a link with Duns Tew - I had just come across a nice church and, in typical genealogist fashion, decided to explore the churchyard. There were hundreds of gravestones, most of them barely readable. However, I was drawn to a line of stones leading towards the main door of the church and, when I looked really closely, I felt sure that some of them had the word PREEDY on them, so I took some digital photographs. My husband thought I was mad, as he couldn't identify any words on them at all.
However, when we went into the church he was in for a surprise. Hanging on the wall was an old, but very useful, plan of the churchyard and, guess what, the exact gravestones that I had photographed were confirmed as PREEDY stones!!
I have yet to link those PREEDYs to my line, but I'm sure there must be a connection ... otherwise, why else would they have called me over?!!
Good luck with your research!
Chris.

well done that girl !!
My husband is the same . He is completley uninterested in our family history . I personally think it is a lovely thing to pass down the family .
mrst ;)

I have a bit more news to add................hope you aren't all getting bored by now :D
I am in contact by email with another rellie who is descended from my GG Grandfather's first marriage. We have been constantly swapping our Challinor information, and today he has emailed me to tell me that he has Richard Challinor's two marriage certificates :o ;D ;D ;D
Now I am ecstatic............. ;)

Can I join the club of the hubby's who don't have any interest in family history? We should set up a support network so we can at least have someone to tell our exciting discovery's too ;D. Its a pity really when I first started doing this it was because his mum had started, with bits of info many years ago that she was never able to prove. I took the job on years after she died and have learnt a lot of the things she was looking into were right, like the fact there was a Lord Mayor of Melbourne descended from part of hubby's family :D. Every now and then I get a glimmer of interest from him, but I think that he just assumes I have spent so long at all this I cant get any further back ;D But then I like a challenge and when you get into doing family history there is just so much to learn I don't think you ever finish ::)
-
Great news Jan. I am really happy for you...wish me luck when I go grave hunting in the next few weeks! ;)
By the way, sign me up for the uninterested husband's club...he didn't even get excited when I told him a Stafford (one of his family names) had married the daughter of a prince...admittedly I have in no way made an actual connection (yet), but you never know :o :D
And when I said I wanted to go and visit some grave yards next week...well I might as well have said I wanted to take the children into a lion enclosure!! ::)
Why does all the exciting stuff have to be on his side?? I only get miners, colliers (yes there is a difference apparently) and agr. labourers >:(
Oh well, my childrens sometimes seem vaguely interested and I know his mother would have loved it ???
Julie :)

Oh graveyard hunting ;D Yes husbands really like that ::) I can still remember hunting for some of my ancestors, Smiths of all names :( whilst mine sat in the car ;D. The problem is that some of these graveyards are a bit daunting to go to on your own, not because of our dear departed ancestors but sometimes because of the local undesirables that can hang around in them :'(

Well girls !
I think Paul E must have moved all the good suggestions from yesterday ::) ::) ::)
Must be a "man thing" ..........!
Shame the site went down - but at least you guys know how to get your man involved!!
Annie :P

(I've been dying to use that since I found out what it meant!!)
Nice one Annie - I did manage to read your hints before the site went down ;)
Will be trying them out this week ::)

Well done Jan, after trying to find them on the non existant 1841...which was disappointing for you.
You'll never guess what?
Last Monday I met (for the very first time) Susan from USA, in Tarporley, Cheshire, where we went grave hunting for her family, and while walking round arm in arm, she said, we had a lovely meal in a Pub in SHOCKLACH on Friday night !!!
I said Oooh! that's where Lloydy's rellies come from... I nearly said if I'd known I'd have asked you to take a look round the grave yard (by torch light) for the Challinors. She would have done it too.
I'm dead chuffed for you chuck !!!
lots of love
Su :D

I am off work this week i might go up the graveyard myself . Think its a great idea to keep the girls posted on our sucesses . My husband is glued to that history channel on sky all week , i feel i was part of ww1 and 2 but really doesnt see the point in this family tree lark . Humph !

This is getting wierd :o
My husband loves war games, is fascinated by WW2, but is (as I think I might have mentioned ;D) totally unimpressed by family history :P
Do you think there ia a gene that brings female family history fans and nonpersonal history loving men together ???
Could be a scientific study here ::)
Anyway, I am on a bit of a roll at the mo, so I don't care what he says.
Mustn't complain though...we were out in the car today and he was driving ::) and as we were going through a town of particular interest I asked if he would stop by the war memorial, as I am led to believe I have a relative named on it...he did drive by...admittedly at the speed of light so it was more a case of seeing the memorial...just...rather thn any actual names...but hey that is progress :D
:)Julie :)

Hi Sue,
It was absolutely amazing to meet you and have a real time (((hug)))!!
What a heavenly day we had. I looked forward to this the whole time I was away.
If I had only known about Lloydy's rellies I would have most definitely have been happily roaming around Shocklach grave yard in the dark...After having three good sized glasses of Shiraz with my meal at "The Bull", I would have no doubt made some fascinating discoveries. I wouldn't have needed a torch either. :o ;D
My heart is still in the green and leafy lanes of Cheshire, and always will be.
Thanks for all your kindness my friend.
Lots of love,
Susan xxx

Can I join in the "my other half really isn't interested" club?
My boyfriend has no idea why I am so interested in doing my family tree - especially the traipsing round the graveyards bit. Although i can understand that to some extent as it always seems to rain on the days I've planned to go gravestone hunting!
My boyfriend is seriously regretting telling me to "get a hobby". It means that whenever he complains, I remind him that it's all his fault I started it in the first place ;D

Hi Sahara
Its so addictive though isnt it ? Sometimes I can spend night after night investigating . Its quite bad when it gets to friday and you realise you have hardly had a conversation all week with the other half ! How has your search been going ?
Mrst
-
Hi mrst,
It's far too addictive. I can spend an entire evening playing with all my family tree stuff only to realise that suddenly it's time to go to bed and I've barely said hello to my boyfriend, let along asked him how his day was!
The search is going REALLY well tho! I have gotten back much further than I thought I would on some lines (and I think I'm going to have to learn Latin for one of them now!). The Italian and Austrian part of the family is a bit of a no go so far tho so that's been a bit disappointing.
The good thing about doing your family tree is that it's a fantastic alternative when the football is on ;D In fact, I prefer it when the football is on these days as then I have no one fighting with me for the computer or the desk ;D

My family go around telling everyone that (cue spooky voice) I see dead people, a la 6th sense!! ::)
(I got the ending to that film well before the collective 'oh!' in the cinema!! ;D (Quite proud of that really as I usually only listen to scary films as I keep my eyes shut the whole time :o
-
Sue Stanley - If only I had known you were going to Shocklach I could have asked you to do the graves searching for me ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
I spent last weekend searching another graveyard - this time at St Mary's church in Welshpool. It's a massive graveyard, with each area on a stepped incline (can't think of any other way to describe it) and with beautiful views of the Welsh hills.
Unfortunately, I wasn't lucky and couldn't find the 4 rellies I was looking for - even though I definitely know they're in there somewhere!!!!!!!!! They're probably among the ones without headstones :(

I know the feeling - went to a graveyard last week with quite a good idea of where the graves should have been, but it was so overgrown I couldn't see anything :(
So frustrating :-\ ???

Julie
