Title: Richardi Goldi
Post by: splottboy1 on Wednesday 08 March 17 22:06 GMT (UK)
Hi, I have come across this record in my Peckham family Tree research, for Richardi Golde in the Somerset, England, Church of England Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials, 1531-1812.
Its the baptism of Ursula Golde his daughter.
Its a 50 page book, and it seems to be in Italian, with some Dutch people as well.
I am wondering what is it all about.
Is it a record of baptisms on a ship that may have come from Italy.
Its very interesting so I hope someone can help.

I don't have a worldwide sub. for Ancestry so can't comment except to say could it be the Parish Register in Latin? as the place is High Ham Somerset.
OK I've got it now & as suggested it's Latin.

Latin, as said above.

Filia is Latin for daughter.

Thanks Jim, for your reply.
Its just that most of the names in the  book seem to be Italian, so its a mystery to me ??
Hope someone can help.

You may find that the names have been converted to Latin (which did happen in Protestant as well as Catholic churches).  For instance:
Ricardi - of Richard
Henricus - Henry
Georgius - George
Maria - Mary
Elsbet - Elizabeth

and so on.

Hope this helps.

The names are written in Latin, which might appear to be Italian, but it specifies on the first page that it is from 1569 to 1653 and Ancestry states again that it is for High Ham in Somerset between those dates.

Try here for names :

Thanks everyone.
Thats interesting in early 1600's that Protestant baptisms could have converted their names to Latin in the these times. All my family from this time were Church of England until the late 1850's, and then with the influx and inter marrying of the poor Irish who came to Wales, our family all became Catholic.
I was wondering if anybody can help me find out exactly which parish in Ham this registration would have taken place ?
There must have been a South Ham and a North Ham I suppose.
Finding out where they lived would be great information for me, so I hope someone might be able to put some light on this ??

Thanks Philip,
Good information.
To have an Italian connection in our family would make it interesting, but perhaps its not the case. I was thinking that an Italian ship perhaps sunk and its passengers and crew might have been the people recorded in Ham records. It would be interesting to see if the Ham records are anywhere near Ringwood [South HAMton], as the family lived in Ringwood for 200years.
Thanks again everybody .

URSULA, Daug of Richard Gold was Buried 18 Jan 1614, St Andrew, High Ham
(so was another Daug named after her?)

RICHARD Goold, Senior, buried 12 Jan 1646 same Church
ADRIANA Gould, Wife of Richard, 29 Nov 1668 same Church

FreeREG, old site I use, has a few early of High Ham Records

Thanks so much Trish 1120

My records which are still a bit sketchy show that my 9th Great Aunt Jone Peckham married Richardi Golde in 1665 in Hampshire ....

Name   Jone Peckham
Gender   Female
Christening Date   24 Jun 1643
Christening Place   RINGWOOD,HAMPSHIRE,ENGLAND
Father's Name   Richard Peckham

Then the 1665 marriage is:

England Marriages, 1538–1973
Indexing Project (Batch) Number   M15056-1
System Origin   England-ODM
GS Film number   0994051 IT 3-5

Then I found Ursula Golde being baptised 21st August 1614 with Richard Goldi next line down in the book.

Name   Ursula Golde
Gender   Female
Baptism Date   21 Aug 1614
Baptism Place   High Ham, Somerset, England
Father   Richardi Golde
FHL Film Number   1526638

I was thinking that there could have been a connection, however the records show two different places, so perhaps I have it wrong. Perhaps Ursula's mother was also Ursula ? but one is in Ringwood and the other Somerset.

Do you think I am on a wild goose chase

Sorry I cant confirm any connection to Jone  Peckham/Richard Golde who married 1665.

As I said High Ham Records are on FreeREG;
Children of Richard Gold/Golde were;
John 1611
Ursula 1614
Walter 1621
Richard 1624
Eleanor 1627
Margaret 1629

So all of these born many years before that 1665 Marriage.

Not sure why you are looking in Somerset for a baptism for Richard  :-\

Do you have his burial as it may indicate his age to give an approximate year of birth.  There are Gold (and variations) in Ringwood in the baptisms including this one so there could be others

Richard Golde
Christening    20 Jul 1649
RINGWOOD,HAMPSHIRE,ENGLAND
Father's Name   Barnard Golde

Thanks again.
I was wrong and was on a wild goose chase.
They were definately in Hampshire, and not Somerset.
If I want to go further back, what would you suggest, perhaps in this case church records in or near Sopley or Ripley ?
