Where would I look to find out if my gt aunt divorced her husband, she left him after only six weeks of marriage.
-
Hi,
Depending on the year and country some divorce records are available on FindMyPast and Ancestry. Otherwise have a look at The National Archives -

Hello
I discovered a divorce that I hadn't known about after purchasing a marriage certificate from Scotland's People. The certificate itself contains a stamp in the first column indicating that the couple subsequently divorced. You will also receive details of the divorce as a free image
(Incidentally, this divorce also occurred in 1919)
Also, both of their death certificates were marked 'Divorced' as neither had remarried
Hope that helps

Thank you every one for your help,I have got susans birth and marriage cert but can't find her death cert, but thanks again for all you help.
-
Did your great aunt possibly remarry ? She was very young when she divorced he first husband.
If she did then its back to Scotlands People to see if there was another marriage for
Dorrie
-
Hi dorrie, she is a mystery to me ,just can't find a death for her,I found her illegitimate son found his death in dunoon Scotland in 1970 but nothing for Susan, never mind will keep looking. Thanks for your reply. Cathy.

Was her son born after the divorce? If he died in Scotland his death certificate should give details of his mother & her status.
flst
-
Hi,her son was born two years after she left her husband, don't think she got divided on her sons death cert it says she is deceased,no father on cert.
-
Meant to say divorced.
-
So does it state Susan Heron m.s.Kelly (deceased) ?
flst
-
Just says Susan Kelly deceased.
-
Do you know where Susan's son was born, did he marry, if so where & when?
The marriage (if he was married) would give you her status at that time?

It might be interesting to see if James' death certificate mentions his brief marriage.
-
Hi, susans son was born in Glasgow no father on his cert. He never married, died in dunoon 1970.
-
Trying to find death for, michael James heron he was born 1891 Patrick Glasgow.he married Susan Kelly in 1919glasgow would appreciate any help thanks.
-
Have you not checked Scotlands People as that is the only website for that type of info. I can see a possible entry on the free index
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/search-our-records

Was he still living when his wife died? When and where did Susan die?
-
Free search on SP shows he died 1965 Glasgow aged 78 (seems to have gained 4 years along the way).
I note from online tree his parents were James and Sarah which concurs with the death certificate. Describes his status as 'widower of Janet Kelly'. He died 16/12/1965 and informant was his brother Thomas.
Her Christian name wrong but doesn't mention divorce.

Reading the other thread I wonder how the link to the Susan Kelly with illegitimate son was confirmed.
Threads merged.

What was the maiden surname of Susan's mother?
Not sure if this works on the 'new' site but worth trying with her own maiden surname & mother's maiden surname?

A search using mother's maiden surname only works if the mother's maiden surname is in the original index, i.e. the majority of deaths after 1974, and a few in earlier years.
If/as/when SP gets round to adding mothers' maiden surnames to the original indexes, this will become more useful. But don't hold your breath. That would be a massive undertaking and require resources that they may not have available.
Cathy52, it would be a very good idea if you were to give us all the information on Susan's birth and marriage certificates. You seem to have been drip-feeding occasional nuggets, but as far as I can see you haven't told us everything you know, so trying to help is a bit like trying to complete a jigsaw puzzle with half the pieces missing. I can't believe this thread has grown to 4 pages without the names of Susan's parents.

Susans parents were john Kelly and Sarah Potts both from Ireland, Michael James heron(susans husband)parents are James heron and Sarah kinlegham.Susan and Michael married in1919 Glasgow Susan left him after only six weeks I don't think they got back together again.I found susans birth&marriage cert on sp,I have searched so long for susans death cert but can't find anything.other info I have is from the poor law application.so trying to find Michaels death cert to see if it gives any info to see if they got divorced.
-
If they were divorced, the original marriage entry will be stamped that they were divorced.

Thanks everyone for your help,
