Title: William Perrin
Post by: Ann Handyside on Saturday 04 March 17 01:35 GMT (UK)
Looking for relations of a William Perrin believed to have lived in Napier in the early 1800's. Apparently had a first family then married again to Ellen Georgina Brunette from Hawera while still married to his first wife. They had three children Maud "Queenie", John "Jack" and William who died at the age of 17 years, This family moved to Rotorua where later Ellen managed a Boarding House in Fenton Street for a number of years and raised her young family there. William just seemed to disappear though Ellen did try and gain child maintenance for young William but failed in court.

Hello...

Welcome to Rootschat :)

Can I be pedantic :) and say that Napier (est.1855) didn't actually exist in the early 1800's

And if William first got married in 1882 it's more than likely that he didn't either.

---

The 1928 death of a William PERRIN in Dannevirke seems a possible contender for your man. Buried at Mangatera Cemetery. Accidental overdose, according to PapersPast. Charitable aid funeral according to the cemetery website.

Hi everyone,

Many thanks for all the help of my missing mysterious great grandfather William Perrin. You have found more than I have in the past 20 yrs about him. Can now understand why no one in the family talked about him.
Does anyone know anything about the child son he had with his first wife Agnes?
Thank you all once again super help.

Hi ... why do you say "son" ???

According to the NZ Birth Index (online), the child born to Agnes and William PERRIN in 1883, appears to be a daughter ?     She is named as "Agnes" (same as her mother).

1883 / 4320  - PERRIN - Agnes

[Date of birth (deduced from online listing) is = 6 January, 1883. ]

Hi Ann Handyside

What I find odd, is that during the maintenance case hearing (Dec. 1913 - Jan. 1914) there is no mention of a child born of the union of William PERRIN and his first wife Agnes ?

Agnes PERRIN just turns up (unexpectedly) in 1893 (2 year after William's re-marriage) ... and then waltzes off with a sizeable amount of "hush money".   ::)   If her child was in her custody at that time, then why did Agnes not also make a claim for maintenance ?

I can't see a death in New Zealand for the child born in 1883.

There is a little further info published in the following late-January 1914 article >

http://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/NZH19140128.2.28

.... namely that William PERRIN had told new wife Ellen that "his first wife had died in July 1883".

And ...
Ellen stated that before she wed, extensive enquiries in Australia re: Agnes PERRIN had been made, and that William PERRIN, her own father and herself, had been satisfied that first wife Agnes was dead.

*  So why were enquiries being made (specifically) in Australia ?

*  Why did Agnes PERRIN "come hunting" her husband after 9-10 years ?     * And had she been living in Australia ?

Agnes PERRIN - cont'd.

I'm pretty sure that all the following info (to be posted) related to Agnes nee MADDEN, who wed William PERRIN at Christchurch in 1882.

The following seems to be Agnes's arrival in New Zealand - February 1878 - as an assisted immigrant to Otago (Ship:   "Piako" )

MADDEN - Agnes - 21 years [bc 1856 ] - occupation:  Nurse

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HT-DYN7-PJ1?mode=g&i=14&cc=1609792

I note that her native place is given as "Hants" *... which is the abbreviation for "Hampshire, England".
But according to her marriage notice of 1882, Agnes was "of Bangalore, Madras, India".  [See later information which is to follow. ]
[*  Although the shipping lists make provision for entering "native place", what is written in that column is not always correct in being "place of birth" ... sometimes it can be representative of the "last place" a person resided.  ]

Agnes PERRIN - cont'd.

The probable "age" from the 'Piako' passenger list for Agnes MADDEN ... coupled with the marriage notice advice that she was "of Bangalore, India" was helpful .... but it was more to do with her occupation and life on the high seas, that enabled her to be found in later life.  ;D

Australia - passenger lists to and from - was the obvious first place to look.
And there she was !!   Her name emblazoned on at least 2 pages full of shipping lists (and too many to detail here  ;D) and giving varying degrees of information about her age and place of birth (the latter transcribed as "Bungadore" , "Bungendore" .. or similar).

She became a "stewardess" and served on many vessels.  I've only looked at a few of the lists but seems she probably travelled between Europe and Sydney on occasions.

From what I've found so far, her journeys begin in January 1886 - on the vessel "Barcoo" - from Glasgow to Sydney - arriving 10/1/1886.  [I'll look over these lists again just to get a better idea.]
Agnes PERRIN - 28 years - Stewardess (- substituted for Pantry stwd. which was crossed out).
Of What Nation :    - Bangalore

Agnes PERRIN - cont'd

The last appearance of Agnes (or "A.") PERRIN, stewardess on vessels into Australia, seems to be around 1895 - from Marseille (France) to Sydney.  [Will check further though.]

Haven't done a thorough check of UK Census returns, but by 1911, Agnes is living in London (Hammersmith/Fulham area).   She gives her occupation as "Only house work".   Aged 54 years - born Bangalore, India.   A Widow  < wink >  Has completed 30 years marriage  <wink again > (marr. c. 1881).
Issue :    1 child born alive / 1 child now dead.  ;)
Appears to be living alone ... and signs as Mrs. Agnes PERRIN.
-----

So it seems that if she took up life on the seas, say from 1886, then she probably didn't have a child in tow ?
