Hello,
My wife's 2 x Great Grandfather was Francis Kelly, born in Mohill, Co. Leitrim, in about 1816/17.
We know that he and his wife came in England and settled in London, aged 28 years he joined the Metropolitan Police, on the 20th October, 1845.
Obviously we would like to know more of his ancestry, can anyone help with this, any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Have you been in touch with the Police?
Do you know when in retired, did he get a pension?
Do you know his Police Number?

Hello,
More questions here, sorry.
You say that he and his wife came to England so presumably he married in Ireland? What was his wife's name and was she from Mohill too?
Were there any children born in Ireland?
Do you have him in English censuses - I have looked but haven't spotted him yet.
Thanks
Heywood

I think he is on the 1851 census in Whitechapel Mddx
Archive reference HO107; Piece number 1543; Folio 39; Page 10
Francis KELLY (33) b. Ireland, Leitrim
Anne KELLY wife (28) b. Ireland, Roscommon
Ellen KELLY dau (7) b. Ireland, Roscommon
Francis KELLY son (3) b. Middx Spiddal Fields
Mary Ann KELLY dau (1) b. Middx Spiddal Fields
Seeing the birth of Ellen was in Ireland I would assume that Francis and Anne married in Ireland

Thanks myluck. I have him now. His age has been transcribed as 23 yrs and perhaps should be 33 yrs.

I don't see them on the 1861 but the family is on the 1871 still in the same area with several more children
Anne is now deceased and Francis is described as a widower
Locating the birth certificate of one of the children would give Anne's surname and help search for a marriage

Thank you for the interest shown , thus far.
Originally most of what we had was from the Census Returns. I did however obtain a birth certificate of one of the children, Walter Ternes Kelly, born in 1857, and as MyLuck mentioned Anne’s surname was recorded. She was formerly Ann Lester, and as we know from the Census she was born in Roscommon.
As their first child Ellen was also born in Roscommon it’s possible/probable that the marriage was in that county.
I do have records re Francis from the Metropolitan Police which include his warrant number, date of joining and retirement date, he did receive a pension. It’s from these records that I have his place of birth as Mohill. There is nothing else in those records that take us any further, he gave his age as 28 when he joined so presumably he was born around 1816/17 as previously mentioned, as he joined the Met on the 20th October, 1845..
I am grateful to Rathmore, Heywood and MyLuck for their time and effort, any further information would be greatly appreciated.

There is marriage in St. Peter's RC in Athlone, Co. Roscommon on Feb 12 1842 LINK (http://registers.nli.ie/registers/vtls000633872#page/317/mode/1up)
Francis KELLY to Anne LYSTER
Witnesses Martin CONNOR & Catherine ALLEN
Unfortunately no parents named
There is an Eleanor KELLY baptised on Dec 23 1842 in the same church (original not online)
Father Francis and Mother Anne LYSTER

That's brilliant!
In 1881 - Ellen is Ellen Coleman b Atherton, Ireland.
I was wondering if it had been said or interpreted as ''Atherlone'.

Thanks again to MyLuck and Heywood, great results as far as I am concerned.
I would certainly never have located the marriage or Eleanor’s baptism, so it’s a real bonus to have them.
Please excuse my ignorance of Irish records, but does the fact that the marriage took place in a Roman Catholic church help in possibly locating the birth/baptism of Francis. It’s likely he was born into that faith and presumably that would help in locating when and where he was baptised in Mohill.
Eleanor would certainly be ‘ Ellen ‘ the first child of Francis and Ann. Heywood’s find regarding Ellen in the 1881 Census helps, I did not have this, a young widow, she was still living in the in the East End of London where the family settled. Younger brother Walter aged 23 years was living with her.
Ann’s surname looks from Irish records to be Lyster, as opposed to Lester, although, as with all records it very much depended the person recording the name.
It of course would be great to locate both Francis and Ann’s baptisms and parentage, so any further help or advice would be appreciated.
In the meantime I am extremely grateful for the help given, many thanks.

No problem Ian
Those early records are scarce and sometimes even finding a record doesn't mean it is correct
It is a shame that there are no parents recorded on the marriage

Hi MyLuck,
When I first found an Irish connection in my wife's line someone mentioned that it would be very difficult tracing back, it seems to be that way.
What has been encouraging is that you and others have taken the time to pursue this, therefore it was well worth asking for help in the first place.
It's all appreciated.
