Title: *COMPLETED* Listers Entry ??? Help!!
Post by: Ladyfing on Wednesday 27 July 05 13:49 BST (UK)
I have in front of me, straight  off the press as it were, birth cert. for :
December 12th 1847 St. Mary's Church Gateshead Durham
Thomas Bone of full age Smith residence: Listers Entry, fathers name Joseph Bone Glasscutter to Margaret Shotton of full age residence: Listers Entry, fathers name George Shotton Coal-trimmer.
Question. What/where is Listers Entry ? Anything to do with Low Fell or Gateshead Fell? What are my chances of finding both fathers on 1841 and 1851 censuses?
 :) :) :) :)
Many thanks
Debbie

I know that there is still a Listers Lane in Low Fell, so that may be a clue.

Debbie,

Be aware that Census 1841 does not record relationships and rounds ages to inits of 5.

Hi Gary,
Thank you very much for that, at least it gives me some idea where the Bones were living. Where can I get the map you were talking about? Can someone see if they can find Joseph and Thomas etc on the 1851/41 census if they have access to it please?
Joseph , glasscutter aged c.45ish. Thos would have been living at home pre 1847 aged in his teens in 1841. He married Margaret Shotton in 1847. Don't know who his mother was. There may be more Josephs, and a William at least in both censuses and of course I'm thinking it would be Listers entry or Gateshead High St.?
Many thanks

hi

So far the only Bones i can find in the booklet of the 1851 census living in Listers Yard are:

Lydia aged 53
Jon. aged 30
George aged 18

I only have 1 booklet for Gateshead but there are two others, the 1851 and 1891 census are in booklets for Northumberland and Durham published by the N and D family history society.  Maps for the Gateshead area are at Gateshead Central Library.

It mat be worth trying ancestry.co.uk as they have the census from 1861 onwards, worth spending £6.99 to use for a while

Hi Gary,
I couldn't find them in 1861. But I did find Joseph Bone married to Lydia Walker on 13/08/1814 at St. Marys Parish. They are both registered as resident in 'other'. I wonder if this is them? I'll try to check out baptisms after this date.
Many thanks for all your help.

Hi Gary,

This is fantastic information and it certainly ties in with the 1841 census details I have also received today from someone else. On that census the dwelling is listed as Oakwellgate. Same people definately. I'm going to read the report on the link you gave me in further detail as it certainly gives an insight into the general social and living conditions of working class which to me is far more interesting than how far back I can trace my family at the moment. Fascinating stuff, truly fascinating and I cannot thank you enough. ;D

Grateful thanks and best wishes
Debbie
