As I live in Australia I have been sitting on the phone for ages on at least 5 times recently trying to get through to order a certificate.
As they have introduced the 'Real Me' to the online ordering which I dont think is relevant to me I am really frustrated with the waiting times I have experienced.
Are other people having the same problem?

RealMe is only needed for certificates outside the historical limits.

I need a marriage certificate from 1942 and I know all the details, date, both bride and groom names but would like to know where the marriage took place and the witnesses.

Hi
.... if you're wanting names of marriage witnesses, then you won't get them if you order a certificate !!! [Info re: witnesses is NOT transcribed onto certificates. ]
You really need to order a printout of the marriage record.

Hi again
* Have you tried contacting NZ BDM via email ??
As it's a 1942 marriage record you are wanting, yes it will come under "non-historical" records ... and the method of purchase will be via a verified account (e.g. "Real Me").
Perhaps an email to NZ BDM will alleviate your frustration ? I'm sure they can talk you through the process of ordering from outside of New Zealand. :)

I have ordered by phone and received a printout by email quite recently but I was able to get through quite easily For some reason they are busy and sometimes I have waited 25 mins and given up. Might try emailing them but I dont think I would give credit card details by email

Would the marriage have been written up for a newspaper? Have you checked Papers Past?
