Title: LookUp Request - Wallace of Tobermore, Maghera, Derry
Post by: crosshands on Monday 20 February 17 09:32 GMT (UK)
Can you help with a brickwall?

I am trying to understand the WALLACE Family. Parents John Wallace (b.1869) and Elizabeth Haslett (b. 1870).  The family is on both the 1910 & 1911 census living in Tobermore - both born Co Londonderry and in 1911 married for 14 years - thus married 1896/7. Both Church of Ireland - John a carpenter: 6 children all accounted for.

On 12 Aug 1897, there is a birth record for twins - Margaret Sophia Wallace and Dudley Ward Wallace. Born Tobermore and the first born children.

BUT - I cannot find any record of the marriage; not on IrishGenealogy or NIdirect which I need to establish fathers' names.

LOOKUP REQUEST - is it possible to check CofI Parish Records for either a marriage or Baptism for the twins (if baptised, then parents must have been married).

Thanks

PRONI are supposed to have the Kilcronaghan church records microfilmed according to this listing but I didn't see them in PRONI's own catalogue.

For reference- note difference in ages-

Perhaps they didn't marry in Ireland- have you looked in Scotland or England?

or Baptism for the twins (if baptised, then parents must have been married).
Parents wouldn't have to have been married in order to baptise children although a baptismal register might indicate if illegitimate

Many thanks (as usual).  I can't get to Proni and was hoping the Church records might be available elsewhere (in England many are on CD).  I thought about an 'away' marriage but can't find anything - other siblings of Elizabeth have married in Kilcronaghan but you could be right.  It's the Wallace father I need as there were 2x John Wallace born same place and time.
I see the marriage parish records from you link from 1845 onwards are not held at Proni but marked 'LC (local custody)' and wonder what that means.

Local custody means they are held at the church/with rector.

Did you see difference in ages for John Wallace in 1901/1911?

Yes, sorry - I did notice the different census ages (and occupations) but who knows which is right?  I am assuming the 1911 is more likely correct - remember he is not very literate, if at all - they are clearly the same family.  The birth records for the children also put him as a carpenter.

Son John in 1911 census is listed as born Scotland- his birth certificate should include date and place of parents' marriage.

To make it more complicated, there is an alternate set of parents for John - born 1868 to David Wallace and Eliza Caldwell. They fit the census details as well.

And they were church of Ireland (as was the census) whereas James Wallace and Mary Jane Winton, (parents of John b.1869) were presbyterian.

Finding the 1896 wedding record would sort this out.

This site has several Tobermore graveyards, but I couldn't find anything relevant.

(NB we already have the Bangor gravestone for John Wallace and Elizabeth Haslett, nothing interesting there)

I have now found the birth record for John Wallace in Scotland which gives the marriage of his parent in 1896 also in Scotland (although as ever, I can't find it in the records!).

Anyway, this provides the answers and completes my request.  Many thanks to all that helped.

the marriage of his parent in 1896 also in Scotland (although as ever, I can't find it in the records!).

If you haven't found the marriage yet, search under Lizzie Hazlett in Dennistoun
