Help!! Have found a possible ancestor but on the IGI is states Michael St-Wesleyan Whitehaven. Is this a place or a religion? Cass
-
Hi Cass
I've just done a lookup for someone and the occupation for 1 of the household members was : Wesleyan Minister.
Hope this helps

Michael Street Wesleyan would have been (possibly still is) a Wesleyan Chapel.
Wesley was a fire brand evangelical preacher and hymn writer, originally itinerant but founding chapels as he went along. Wesleyan's have close links with Methodism and indeed most towns where both flourished now have a combined Wesley Methodist Church/Chapel

Further to my last post, Michael Street, Whitehaven still exists.
See this page at www.streetmap.co.uk/..... (http://www.streetmap.co.uk/newmap.srf?x=297685&y=518187&z=1&sv=michael+street&st=6&tl=Michael+Street,+Whitehaven,+Cumbria,+CA28&searchp=newsearch.srf&mapp=newmap.srf)

Again further to my previous posts it was Charles Wesley not John. Senior Moment!!

Many thanks Caz and Keith. I don't think that this is my ancestor as none of the other children have Wesleyan at their christening. All the others are baptised at the Holy Trinity Whitehaven which I think is ?CofE Cass
-
As I said Wesley was an evangelical preacher and many left the Established Church 'cos his brand of religion was more exciting. Did the CofE baptisms precede the Wesleyan?
-
Hi Keith, No the first 2 were Wesleyan, then the next 6 were Holy Trinity. Cass

Why don't you post all the details you have on the ancestor you're looking for, it'll be much easier to find him/her that way
Name, age, place of birth
Parents' names, ages, places of birth
What documentaiton do you have ?
Census Returns, Certificates etc. etc.

Hi Mobo, have posted lots of topics on rootsweb and have had some fantastic replies. This problem arose because I found my John Whitfield on 1841 census with a child I did not know existed Wm Thomas b1839 and the omission of 3 children that should have been there. Then on checking the IGI again we found other children that could have been from the same family ie Thomas 1830 and Mary 1828. These 2 children are the Wesleyan ones. The ones I assumed were part of my family are Jane 1830, John 1831, Edward 1833, Mary ann 1835 and James 1837 - all baptised at Holy Trinity with Mary as mother. There is another John born in 1834 but that would make 2 Johns (siblings) in the same family. Unless the earlier one died? All very confusing. Cass

:D :D
Mmmm... as they were all born before Civil Registration it does make things difficult, certainly the IGI is not to be relied on.
I think what you have to do, is find a John Whitfield with children Jane, John, Edward, Mary Ann, & James on the 1851 & 1861 Census, who will no doubt be yours. As for the other children you've found on the 1841 Census and the IGI - they sound like red herrings to me. But who knows ??

Hi Cass,
My family - the Fildes, not the Fagans - have been very heavily involved with the Wesleyan church back to when the first Wesleyan Sunday school was set up in Manchester in 1785.
Your posting caught my eye, not only because of the Wesleyan question but your crest is the same as mine Fagan!
My Fildes baptised most of their children in Wesleyan or Methodist churches but also used Manchester Cathedral intermittently - it appears CofE would suffice for a baptism.
I am looking for baptisms in Wesleyan churches in Manchester if anyone can help me - they are not on IGI.
My needs are as follows
BAPTISMS
James Fildes b c 1813
Thomas Paine Fildes b c 1817
George Fildes - possibly George Washington Fildes b c 1810
Other siblings are Robert, Sarah
MARRIAGE
Their parents marriage too - William Fildes b 1789 and Mary Pritchard b 1789
Hope you find what you need, Cass.
I'll look at my Fagan stuff and see if anything matches.
Claudia

Hi Claudia I'm thinking that these 2 children are not mine - they are the only ones that I have ever found Wesleyan! As for Fagan. My Fagans were originally from Ireland and settled in Whitehaven, Cumbria in the late 1800's - Patrick and James (!) being two of the names. Don't think they went anywhere else. Cass
-
Thanks Mobo, have posted a request for John whitfield (New Town Whitehaven) for the 1851 census but hadve not had any replies yet. He died in 1859 so will not be on the 1861 census. Cass
-
Thanks Geoff, have worked it out and I think that all of those deaths are children from the same family and it corrosponds with births that I have. It seems they had 8 children with only 3 surviving. This is why I could never find them later on. Cass
-
Geoff, would you be able to check a death at Holy Trinity Church, Whitehaven for a John Whitfield b 1831 who must have died before the birth of the next John in 1834. His parents were John Whitfield and Mary Carr. You very kindly found the deaths of all his siblings but this is the only one unaccounted for. Cass
-
I gave you all I had ... :)

Thanks Geoff. Cass
