Title: DNA test results finding out more about my father's paternal line
Post by: RBC on Sunday 19 February 17 09:39 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I would be very grateful for some advice.
A short while ago I received my FTDNA, test results. My reason for having my DNA tested, was to find out more about my father's paternal line. Not one match. I received a very unexpected match, which appears to relate to my mother's father, who was born out of wedlock, in 1873. I hope the great grandfather of my DNA match was my grandfather's father.  I can give some supporting information as well as the test results. Any help will be much appreciated.

Have you uploaded to gedmatch.com as there will be matches from other sites on there and some tools to analyse. The site is free.I've just sent a sample to the living dna as has someone who shares dna with my family and we are hoping it may be more specific.

Thank you Weste,

I have uploaded my results to Gedmatch but the results of Mr X are not shown there. On FTDNA we are given as 2nd to 3rd cousins. My great grandmother was 17yrs old when my grandfather was born. She and the great grandfather, of Mr X lived in the same area. My grandfathers second christian name, was the name of the great grandfather of Mr X.

My problem is that the son of Mr X thinks that any of the brothers of his great great grandfather could be my great grandfather. To my knowledge there are no other DNA results for the family. Would the DNA results of the descendants of the brothers, if they had been available, give me the same close match as with Mr X. Our level of match falls between my known second and third cousins. I can give details of the records. I hope the above makes some sense. Any comments would be very much appreciated. As is obvious I am very new to this subject.

Kim.

We have both had the FTDNA Autosomal test carried out, that is where our match is. I don't know if Mr X has had any other tests. He had his DNA tested for a specific reason. At least I now know the name of my great great grandfather, I am very pleased about that. I don't want the ask the family too many questions at present. I think Mr X and I share a great grandfather. As his son is not sure about it, I wondered if it is possible for anyone to give me a definite answer.

The amount of DNA cousins share can vary so much so it can be sometimes difficult to pinpoint which brother it is, so Mr X is correct.  It could be any of the brothers, even if one in particular seems more likely. If others tested it might become clearer.

So, you're looking for your mother's father's father, and your maternal grandfather was born in 1873?

Thank you, I have no idea where the above heading came from. From your post it looks as if I will have to accept that I will not know the name of my great grandfather. As the I said I am happy to know who my Great great grandfather was.

Hi RBC,

I can not see where you see a mix up, if you can let me know some more details of where you see a problem I am happy to help.

Regards

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

Apologies. I have read my original post which was very confusing for the readers. I then became confused by the changes in the headings. By the time I read the post from Skoosh I had lost the plot completely. Thank you to all who tried to help me decide if I had found my mother's paternal grandfather. I would now like the thread to be closed.

Don't close it yet RBC!

The weight of evidence that you have (from what you have said) could mean you have identified your gt-grandfather.  But Mr X is also correct in that it COULD be the brothers.

That's where other circumstantial evidence (i.e. paper trail) might help.  For example, if any of the brothers were out of town 8-10 months before your grandfather was born that would rule them out.

For some kits I manage here are the amounts of shared DNA with various cousins.  If you and this man have the same gt-grandfather you would be half-second cousins.  If you have the same gtgt-grandparents you are 3rd cousins.

Person S:
MM (2nd cousin) - total 165cM, longest 40cM
BW (3C) - 120 and 40
RM (3C) - 116 and 19
MD (3C) - 86 and 23
JP (2C1R) - 88 and 41
RS (2C) - 61 and 25
HT (3C) - 55 and 12
JB (3C) - 39 and 10
FA (3C1R) - 36 and 13
CG (1/2 4C) - 36 and 14
CJ (1/2 4C1R) - 32 and 8

Person P (sibling of S):
MM (2C) - 157 and 52
RM (3C) - 149 and 26
BW (3C) - 108 and 21
RS (2C) - 82 and 35
MD (3C) - 79 and 23
JP (2C1R) - 79 and 21
HT (3C) - 68 and 16
JB (3C) - 59 and 18
FA (3C1R) - 38 and 13
CG (1/2 4C) - 32 and 12
CJ (1/2 4C1R daughter of above - must have some segments that match from her father) - 51 and 13

So, as you can see, sometime a more distant relative shares more than a closer one.

hurworth.

Thank you very much for your encouragement. The details of your post were just what I needed. I will now start the process of elimination. How can I change the Heading of the Thread to prevent further confusion? I am not searching for my Father's Paternal line here.
