Title: General Peel Ship

Good evening,
If anyone can shed a light on this I would be greatful.
In the 1871 Census, my Samuel James Peppit age 32years,  was a Master on General Peel, in North Sea, Norfolk.  Looking for him in 1881 census, his wife is now a widow, so he has passed away between the two census. I have looked for his death without success also looked for info on the General Peel with no luck.  How can I find info on the ship ?

Norfolk Chronicle 8 November 1873 :

The Permanent Fund  - On Monday last a meeting of the executive committee of the Fund was held at the Sailor's Home .... An application for relief was made by Louisa Peppitt , wife of James Peppitt , who was recently drowned in consequence of the loss of the smack Yarborough. Peppitt had paid 5s to the fund. the committee granted £5 to the widow and £6 to her children.

In the Edinbrugh Evening News of 28 Oct 1873

Three fishermen drowned -

Three fishermen of the smack Yarborough of Yarmouth were washed overboard by a heavy sea striking the smack whilst fishing in the North Sea.


I cannot see a death reg. in Deaths at Sea.

Any indication what happened to the victims after?

Several Norfolk parishes on the coast have burial records for shipwreck victims and people found on the shoreline. If the crew of the General Peel weren't recovered immediately there is a chance the burial records might have something in the months soon after. FreeReg has good coverage for Norfolk.

There is nothing on the NFHS database. They were lost off the Yarborough , not the General Peel , as already stated.
