Title: Summershill, Mountain Street, Carnarvon
Post by: big g on Saturday 11 February 17 15:08 GMT (UK)
I have a death certificate dated 1932, for my gt.aunt, Janet Ellen Owen nee Williams.
Her third husband Hugh Owen was in attendance, Summershill, Mountain St., Carnarvon. In 1927 they were at 5 Beulah Square.

I have tried to find Summerhill, Mountain St., but all the houses have numbers, no house names.
Was Summerhill a house?

Hi Big G
I found Hugh in the 1939 register and he is definitely living at Summer Hill. The previous entry is 44 Mountain Street which is the end of the even numbered side of Mountain Street. Hugh is "incapacitated" and I am guessing from the birth dates living with his brother Lewis Owen and his wife Catherine. On the Carnarvon Traders website there is a record of Lewis's burial at Llanbeblig Cemetery on 26 Nov 1960 aged 79 years.

Glyn,
Thank you so much for all that information. I don't have access to the 1939 unfortunately.
A Lewis Owen was one of the witnesses to his 1927 marriage; I did wonder if he was a brother - looks like he was!!
I don't have a death for  Hugh Owen - too many......
Knowing that Hugh and Lewis were brothers I can now search 1891/1901/1911 census.
Diolch Glyn.

I had forgotten about the Caernarvon Traders site, until you mentioned it Glyn, so have just had a look under 'trades' and found both Hugh and Lewis Owen.

1930 to 1948 - 5 Beulah Square - coal dealer/merchant. - Hugh.
1936 - Summershill coal merchant/dealer - Lewis.

p.s. I have just amended dates in my earlier posting ....doh !!!

I am pleased the mention of Carnarvon Traders has proved helpful. Here is some more info from the register which might or might not be helpful.
Hugh is the first name of the occupants in Summer Hill, whether this meant he was the owner of the house I am not sure. Unfortunately his DOB is obscured. Lewis was born on 17 June 1881 and describes himself as a "Haulage Contractor". His wife is Kate (Catherine) born 24 Aug 1885. Two blanks for people who might still have been alive in 1990. A domestic servant Katie Owen DOB 11 Mar 1920 later married and changed name to Roberts (could this be a daughter?). A cook Lizzie Jones and a child Yvonne (Owen?) DOB 19 Apr 1936 (could this be a grandchild?).

Glyn,
You are a star.....any info on Hugh and Lewis Owen is welcome.   Janet Ellen Williams, my  nain's  sister appears to have been different to the rest of her siblings - she had a child before marrying the father of her child; left Llandwrog, first husband died c 1917, second marriage, not sure to whom, third to Hugh Owen.

Glyn,
Does the 1939 register give their place of birth?  I have found a 1911 Anglesey for a Lewis and Kate Owen!

Sorry the 39 Register does not give a place of birth. I saw the same 1911 Census record and thought it was a good fit since Lewis is described as a "Farm Teamster" which makes sense since with his later occupation of Coal Merchant/Haulage Contractor where he would probably be working with horses. It says he was born in Llanfair P G and I have found his baptism record in the Llanfair pwllgwyngyll records:
July 7th 1881 Lewis parents Thomas Owen Elizabeth Jones abode Pen y bore? Llanfair P G occupation Labourer.
Do you know when Hugh was born? I have revisited the 39 register and his birth year looks vaguely like 97. I note that Kate and children were born in Llandegfan where there is a baptism record for a Hugh Owen:
Jan 26th 1898 Hugh parent -/Elizabeth Owen abode Caes yn syr?
No father is recorded.

Glyn,
Hugh Owen was b.c. 1879, father Owen Owen - from Marriage certificate -  didn't say that  he was deceased.
So it looks if they weren't brothers, but cousins, second cousins perhaps.

I think you are right they probably were cousins since from the census both fathers Owen Owen and Thomas Owen were born in the village of Pencarnisiog near Rhosneigr. Hugh was born in Llanidan.

I remember Summerhill and it's location. It was between the old Seiloh chapel and Well street. You would need a pre 1960's map to find it's location
All this area was demolished when the new flyover was constructed in Caernarfon. Summerhill was a large house quite elevated from the road. It had a yard in the front where , if I remember correctly there were lorries.
I also remember a coal yard in mountain street run by Mr Owen . There was a large wooden door to the yard and Mr Owen and his son ran the business in the 50's and 60's.  I hope that's of some help to you.

Gwyneth,

Wow, thank you so much.

Hugh and Janet Ellen Owen lived Beulah Square 1927 onwards, but looks like  when she became quite ill she was looked after at the home of Lewis and Kate Owen - this is where she died in 1932.

I have stayed close to the start of the flyover, in a lovely guest house opposite a church, near the roundabout.

Thank you for your  memories.

Following Gwyneth's post about the location, does the attached map help to pinpoint it?

I'm hoping this link will work. It's to a site showing side by side an 'old' map and a current Google Earth satellite view of same area. Note that the cursors on both more or less match which means if you move the cursor on the Google Earth to a particular location it shows that location on the 'old' map
You can also zoom in and out.

Edit: Yes, it works.

David and Gwyl,

Thank you for your help and interest; it certainly does help me.
Glenys.
I have found several trees on Anc***** for Lewis Owen and his family; found that he and his wife Kate both died at Summershill,  Lewis 1960 and Kate 1968.

Perhaps they were nursing Janet Ellen - reason for her dying there in 1932. ???

I have looked on Carnarvon Traders for Hugh and Janet Ellen's burial, nothing.
Found death reg. for Hugh 1954 - Janet Ellen 1932.

Where else could they have been buried ?
