Title: Asylums and Workhouses
Post by: PeteBrooks on Sunday 05 February 17 12:09 GMT (UK)
Hi,

Could anyone tell me whether asylums and workhouses were included in census returns? I assume that they were but can't find any records in Ancestry or The Genealogist - probably because I'm not searching correctly!

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Pete

I've found people in the workhouse on census records so I think asylums would also be included.

People are sometimes indexed just by initials for these institutions. They should give age and place of birth though   ;)

You can usually find institutions using the Browse this collection facility on each census on Ancestry.

Everybody was included in the censuses, those in institutions, in the coastal shipping trade, and at whatever address they were at. If individuals were working that night, or were travelling, they would be enumerated in the house to which they would normally return on the morning after they had finished their shift, or where they were to stay at the next stop on their journey.
The purpose of the censuses was to enumerate everyone in the country alive at mid-night on the day of the census, wherever they were, and all Institutions like Workhouses, Prisons, Hospitals, Lunatic Asylums, where people were inmates were included.

Putting "Inmate" or "Patient" in the Relation Box will list the people in Workhouses and Asylums.
It was only in the 1861 Census that the initials of inmates, patients, prisoners, paupers in institutions needed to be returned, although some were shown by initials in later censuses. People in Asylums are usually only shown by initials.

Hi

This site may assist:-  www.workhouses.org.uk

When page opens click on workhouse locations on left of page
When next page opens click on English poor law unions - you are then presented with a drop down
List with info for each county.

You could give details of which workhouse your ancestor may have been in and their name etc and I am sure you will receive a quick reply from this site.
