Title: Joseph Antoine parents?
Post by: weemalla on Sunday 05 February 17 00:53 GMT (UK)
I'm trying to establish the parents names of Joseph Antoine and when they arrived in Aust. What I know is that Joseph died Jan 1912 in NSW and buried in Gore Hill Catholic Cemetery and cemetery register says he was age 58 making his birth about 1854 but cant find a birth entry in NSW BDM's. Also he married Bridget (Conners, O'Conner or similar) in 1876 in Sydney and had 11 children. Sometimes the name Antoine appears as Antonio. Any help is appreciated.

When Joseph married in 1876 in Sydney NSW he provided first hand information to the clergy about himself, including details about his parents (dad's name and occupation, mum's maiden name etc) and his place of birth, his age, his occupation.    When the clergy then forwarded that information to NSW BDM they may have only provided part of it.  But in about 1912, NSW BDM attempted to collate the information that had not been submitted between 1856-1895.  NSW BDM started with the church records from the churches located in Sydney.   This reconciliation process was not ever completed (WWI, lack of staff, and insufficient funding).

BUT the 1876 church registers should still be extant.  So it should be possible for you do research offline and obtain the elusive info you are seeking.

Here's a thread that should help.

There is a copy of the marriage cert attached to an online family tree and it has been reconciled.  They were married at St Mary's Cathedral (RC), Joseph ANTONIO is a Coachman aged 25 born in NSW, father is also named Joseph, occupation Surveyor.  He has not given a name for his mother whereas Bridget has named both parents,  John CONNOR, Fireman, and Bridget MANNING.  Witnesses Alexander ELLIOT and Mary Jane CONNOR.

The family tree mentioned above suggests that he was the son of Joseph ANTONIO and Mary Rebecca SAMUELS who were married in 1849.  She died in 1856 which would explain why he didn't know her name.

The online indexes accept the use of a wildcard (*) when searching so you should always make use of it.

This Joseph was born Lisbon c1801, a Seaman,  tried for manslaughter at the Old Bailey in 1836 and transported for life on the ship Moffatt.  He is not the one mentioned in newspapers as constantly being in trouble, that man came on the Lady Harewood in 1832.

With all your help I have found Joseph's parents. I never expected to find that he was a convict and that his wife Mary Rebecca was one of the first assisted immigrants to arrive at Twofold Bay. All your help has been much appreciated.
