Is a 3rd great grand-uncle your Great great great (3 times) uncle or your great great great great (4 times) uncle?

4x Great Uncle , I think

A Grand-Uncle is the brother of your Grandfather or Grandmother -- so a Great Uncle

So a Great Grand Uncle would have an extra Great when expressed just with Greats

I notice people using different terms which confuses me.

My grand uncle was my grandmother's brother i.e. any uncle with a 'great' would be a brother of a 'great' not a 'grand' as 'great' is the next generation from 'grand'.

I know what I mean but whether anyone else does, I don't know  ;D

A '3rd great grand-uncle' would be a brother of your 3 x g grandmother or 3 x g grandfather

If you scroll down on the link I gave you with the chart it has it all in detail....

"The siblings of YOUR grandparents are your granduncle or grandaunt,
not great uncle nor great aunt.
Similarly, the siblings of YOUR great-grandparents are YOUR greatgranduncle or great-grandaunt.
Also the same nomenclature
is used for grandnephew and grandniece."

Basically the term "3rd great grand uncle" is meaningless.  If you go back more generations than the great-grand uncle shown on the chart, you add a further "great".  So that would be "great great grand uncle" or "great great great uncle" same thing.  You can't randomly add "1st" "2nd" or "3rd" to something and claim it has a meaning.  Or if you want to make it easier to understand say "great grandfather's uncle" or "great great grandmother's brother" or whatever it may be.

Hi
hard to say because great and grand uncle are the same thing, but at a guess the person who is describing their uncle means their 4th great uncle. I use Great uncle for my grandparents sibling and so on. I personally never use Grand (except for my grandparents of course). I do find the above very confusing,  maybe use grand, grand, grand, or great , great, great, but not both.
Apparently Great is the oldest term , Grand came later

Hi,

It seems to me that '3rd great' indicates how many greats (3) there are before 'grand uncle", ie great great great grand uncle
