My gg grandmother was a Mary PATTERSON born abt 1808 in Antrim. According to her Australian death certificate (Victoria) her parents were Hugh Patterson & Margaret his wife (unknown maiden name). I have not managed to find out where in Antrim she was born although I believe Hugh Patterson was living in Ballymoney in the early 1800s..but could not find a Margaret then! However I have just been advised from another relative that Mary had two additional names being ' Ballantyne Elizabeth'. Could the Ballantyne relate to another associated family? I know the family was Protestant of the Church of Ireland faith. Can someone please enlighten me further about my ancestor Mary? I would love find out for certain where/when she was born! Any help is much appreciated..thanks Rob

Why do you "believe Hugh Patterson was living in Ballymoney in the early 1800s"?

I believe it is possibility but by no means a certainty. I now believe the Pattersons were Scottish originally as the name tends to indicate. I therefore now think they were probably Presbyterian. I realise there would be quite a few churches in Belfast so searching may be a difficulty for me..especially from Australia!! My ancestor may have also had the additional names Elizabeth & Ballantyne. The last name 'Ballantyne' certainly sounds Scottish to me. Can someone please suggest another way of discovering Mary's immediate family group? Thanks cheers Rob

What source does your relative have for the additional names?

Hi Scotmum unfortunately my cousin does not remember where this idea originated from! I am therefore flying a little blind here! Can you please suggest any ways of pursuing this research? Thanks Rob

to have some sort of a start, I looked at the locations listed in the incomplete 1823-1837 Tithes Applotment Books based upon the index work of the Irish Genealogy Hub’s listing for each civil parish in Northern Ireland, which are quicker to lookup if you know the parish! The relevant original books are in the Public Record Office of Northern Ireland (PRONI) Belfast
the actual record is a one line no help in genealogy other than identifying possible locations for namesname in a place
I found 5 civil parishes out of 79 parishe in Co Antrim including spelling variants
Ballintine, J. Townland: Legavar Year: 1824 Ballintoy Antrim
Ballintine, John Townland: Maghernahar Year: 1824 Ballintoy Antrim

you could compare ti Griffiths valuation to widen or reduce the possibilities
eg ballintoy, ballnure disappears and Drummaul and Grange of Ballyscullion and grange of Doagh creep in, that’s chacking with just one spelling ie .
you have the spelling with a y. I found none in these two records

Patterson, Widow Townland: Ballygally Year: 1834

John Ballantine shows up in the 1766 census in Toberkeigh, Ballintoy and again possibly (or maybe a John Jr) in the 1796 the Flax Grower's List together with a Charles Ballantine and a Daniel Ballantine, both perhaps being adult sons of that John Ballantine of the 1766 census. Additionally, the next townland over, a John McKay of Cloughcor married Jane Ballantine (possibly a daughter of the 1766 John) and that couple had a number of children including Charles McKay (putatively named after Jane's brother Charles Ballantine?), James McKay, John McKay, Denis McKay, Margaret McKay, Mary McKay. There are only four sources of documentary evidence available so connecting dots is all that is available, but it is all non-verifiable. See the 1766 Religious Census return for Ballintoy at the PRONI website, and via Tom McAfee's website, the 1796 Flax Grower's List and the 1803 Religious census of Rev. Trail and the 1803 agricultural census. There are many McKays but only the four Ballantines discussed above.
