Hi Rosalie

The only son mentioned  in the 1848 will is John James who, it is stated, is fully provided under his mother's will so has no specific bequest.

Wills after 1858 are only available from HMCTS. If you Google that and Probate Search you should find a link to the site where you can freely search the Probate Calendars though the actual will costs £10.

I can provide a bit more detail once I'm at a computer rather than using a phone

Here's the link for the HMCTS Probate Search

https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills

You'll first need to click on "Wills and Probate 1858 - 1996", type in Scargill and the year (although it says Year of Death, it's really Year of Probate). You can then click on the Next Year / Previous Year in case Year of Probate isn't year of death. After that, you can then, if you want to, order the will (but don't spend your money if it just says "Administration")

Just in case the above instructions are confusing, I can tell you that there's definitely an entry for Frank Chapman. Let me know if you can't find it

As to John Scargill's will, he was of 22/23 Montague Place and Russell Square, Middlesex, Gentleman

As to his other children, he confidently leaves it to the entire discretion of his dear wife and so leaves the entire estate to her and makes her sole executrix

He asks John James to release his estate from any claim he has under his Grandmother Ro[????]'s will, I think because father John spent £50 a year  renovating property.

I can have a go at a full transcription if desired, it's quite short.

Aye, probably in Killarney, Co. Kerry  :)

Don't forget the Probate may not have been granted in the same year as the death occurred

Good luck!

I appreciate this is a late posting on this thread but just thought the following information may be of interest:

Frank Chapman Scargill died 27 Sep 1919 aged 82 at Beaufort House, Killarney. Probate was granted at Cork and sealed at London on 23 Mar 1920 with his estate in England valued at £4267 6s 6d. His widow Constance Mary (nee Landey) was appointed executor - she died at Dun Loaghaire on 4 Apr 1963 aged 84.

Going back to John Scargill, it was Grandmother Redford who was referenced in his will proved in 1848. This refers to Elizabeth Redford, mother of his first wife Mary Catherine Redford who died in 1830. Elizabeth survived her daughter and was living with John Scargill at Burton Crescent in London at the time of her death on 14 May 1833 aged 68. She made her will in March 1831 which was proved at the PCC on 25 May 1833. Son-in-law John Scargill was appointed executor and grandson John James Scargill was to benefit from her estate from the age of 21 onwards (1849). John James Scargill died 4 Feb 1915 aged 86 at Streamlet House, Bromley. His will was proved at London on 18 Mar 1915 with his estate valued at £1375 12s 8d - brother-in-law Samuel Scargill-Bird was appointed executor. Mary Scargill, wife of John, died at 51 Gower St, St Giles on 9 Oct 1882. Her will was proved at the Principal registry in London on 9 Nov 1882 with her estate valued at £8808 16s 5d. Son John James (then living at 84 High St, Islington) and nephew John Mitchel Chapman were appointed executors.

Just as a matter of interest, I am the grandson of Frank Chapman Scargill. He did die in Ireland (Kerry) in 1919. He was 79 when my father was born in 1915.

Hello Geoff
I have been tracing all the various branches of the Scargill family for several years. I believe that Frank Chapman Scargill's paternal grandparents were John Scargill and Mary Snelson married in London in 1787 and that John may have originated from Wakefield, baptised there in 1754 son of another John Scargill, but have yet to prove this.

Hi,

I have a full family tree going back to the 1500s. Frank Chapmans paternal grandparents were  John Scargill (23 Montague Place, Bloomsbury) 1783 - 1848 and Mary Radford.

Hi Geoff
John Scargill (1793-1848) was Frank Chapman's father. Also his mother could not have been John's first wife Mary Catherine Redford as she died in Dec 1830. Frank's elder brother John James Scargill was the only child of this marriage - Frank was the eldest son of John's second marriage to Mary Chapman in 1833. I believe Frank's paternal grandparents were John Scargill (1754-1837) and Mary Snelson (c1760-1819?). Have you traced the Scargill line back to the 1500s? Based on a tentative but yet unproven link to the C18th Wakefield Scargills in Yorkshire, I have the line going back to Wath upon Dearne in Yorkshire in the mid C17th before which the family probably came from Sheffield.

I can't seem to add pictures to this thread but I actually visited Frank chapman Scargill's (my great grandfather) grave. It's located in Aghadoe, Co. Kerry. I also visited Beaufort House where he lived and my grandfather, Jasper, was born. The current owners kindly showed me around the house, especially once he heard I was a Frank's great-grandchild

Hi Peter

I didn't know Frank Chapman was buried at Aghadoe. I understand his father John was buried at Highgate Cemetery in London on 1 July 1848 but I don't know if any memorial survives.

Frank Chapman Scargill, born in Beaufort, Ireland  in 1906, lived as a bachelor on our property in Steveston, British Columbia, Canada, all of his life in our country. He was like a beloved member of our family. He first arrived in about 1938 or 1939 and became a farm hand for my grandfather, Robert Gilbert Ransford. He often told me when I was young that he was from a fairly wealthy family in Co. Kerry Ireland. As our family’s farm began to dwindle in size to make way for suburban development outside of Vancouver, Frank went to work for the City of Richmond in their sanitation department, working on the trucks collecting solid waste. He lived in an apartment in my great-grandfather’s old house. When he retired, he worked around our estate, tending to the gardens and lawns. He died tragically on April 7, 1978, after returning home quite intoxicated and falling down the stairway. Frank also had a brother, Theo, arrive in this area in the 1950s. He lived not far from Frank, but they only saw each other rarely. Theo became a commercial fisherman, fishing the Fraser River for salmon. He lived on the Leslie family farm. I believe he died in 1984.

Thanks for the interesting details of their lives in Canada. I was only aware they had moved to Canada but nothing more. Theophilius was born 19 July 1908 at Beaufort, Co. Kerry. Frank Chapman was born 2 Jan 1906 at Barrowmount, Co. Kilkenny.
