Hi All, i'm after an opinion, I'm searching the history of Ethel Suzanne Smith died in Gainsborough 1979, gives her date of birth as 6th Oct 1892. her marriage in 1919 states her maiden name was Auckland, so looking for Ethel Suzanne Auckland born in 1892 i find a possible born in Gainsborough, however her name is susanna Auckland, no mention of Ethel, although it's the right month and the right year.
Then in the 2 census records she is also down as Susanna, again no mention of Ethel.
Is this the same person ?

2nd christian names were not always stated on census...does her fathers name match with
census + marriage cert.

In 1939, there was a Susannah SMITH with that birthdate living in Hull.
Although married, her husband wasn't there so not much help. There may have been a child with her, but the record is closed.

Apparently the family were well known in Hull, so this is a possibility! what record would that be Geoff ?

The thing is we're not sure of her parents names, it is a friends grandmother and she has asked me to find out about the family, all she knew was her grandmother was Ethel Susannah or suzanne Smith and she died in Gainsborough in 1979, and her husband was George Smith, also the name of her mother so i was able to search the birth record of her mother, that gave me the maiden name Auckland, then from that the marriage of George Smith to Ethel S Auckland, and using the birth date on the death record i was hoping to find the birth record, but only Susanna Auckland appears in the IGI and also the census records, but as far as i can see Ethel & Susanna appear to be the same person.

The 1939 register. Address was 67 Clifton terrace, perhaps there is a directory somewhere that would confirm her husband's name.

I think the marriage cert. is the only way forward..the 1892 birth at Gainsborough has
the mothers maiden name as Roberts..not much help at this stage.

It's quite possible that her birth was registered as Susannah but she became known as Ethel Susannah later, and used this name when she married. Often names on birth records are not exactly what we expect them to be?
Two suggestions:
Broaden your search to a couple of years either side of 1892 - sometimes the year of birth on death records is not accurate.
Look for a baptism for Susannah Auckland - sometimes the date of birth is recorded in the baptism record.

Henry Auckland and Mary Ann Roberts are on the same FreeBMD page June quarter 1883 Gainbro' registration district.
(The 'spare' lady on that page is Sarah Haines, who is actually page 1425. I've advised FreeBMD of the error.)
Marriage is not in the 1837+ Lincolnshire Marriage Index http://mi.lincolnshiremarriages.org.uk/
and as most of the PRs for Gainsborough registration district have been deposited at Lincoln Archives (see Introduction), it's likely that Henry and Mary married in either the Register Office or a non-conformist church. Though see the note at the bottom of the Introduction page re some Notts parishes being in Gainsborough registration district.
Mary Ann's surname matches that in birth registration of Susanna Auckland December quarter 1892.
