Title: Hill family of Cheddar
Post by: Lafrowda on Saturday 28 January 17 17:00 GMT (UK)
I have a 20 year old brick wall.  My 2xG.Grandfather gave his birthplace as Cheddar on the 1851 census in St Just, Cornwall.  His name was Daniel HILL but he sometimes used Thomas HILL. Sometime after 1854 he simply vanished from his home & family.  I am interested in a Thomas HILL who was Christened at Cheddar St Andrew in 1807, born too Walter & Olive HILL nee FOORD. Is this HILL in someones tree and did he leave the area and marry my 2x G.Grandmother in 1838?

Hi

Have you not bought a copy of the 1838 marriage cert to see who he names as his father?  Without that information it would be difficult to determine any baptismal entry

ps - I love your dog - he's gorgeous

Thank you CaroleW.   Yes, I have the wedding cert. and he does give his fathers name as Daniel, he married as Daniel, and was Daniel on the 1841 census. On the 1851 census he was Thomas.  When his first child Elizabeth was born in 1838 he was Daniel on the birth cert and Thomas at the Church christening. Mary, his wife, called herself widow of Thomas in her old age.
I was told that Somerset naming patterns often meant that men changed their names when a son was given the same name. I have no proof of the Walter connection, it was a long shot.
