Title: The Dillon Family of Antrim
Post by: Ashnz on Friday 27 January 17 22:50 GMT (UK)
Hello, I am researching the Irish side of my family and am doing the Dillon side (on my family there is the Dillon side and the McIlroy side - the McIlroy side can be found here incase there is a need for reference of previous research: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=760680.0 (http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=760680.0).

The Dillon family I have been researching is regarding Charles Dillon, his wife Jane Kyle and their children. From the information I have recorded from my cousins is that:
Quote
Charles and Jane had a son James. James left for New Zealand on the 4th November, 1875 leaving behind his brother Charles (Jr) and 4 sisters
. From my interpretation of that information is that Charles Dillon and his wife Jane Kyle had 6 children altogether? (though possibly more if any died at infancy).

From what I have researched I believe it could be James had 3 sisters not 4 - this is what I have found on their children:

Daniel Dillon - born 4th May, 1870
Margaret Dillon - born 16th July, 1865
Charles Dillon (Jr) - born 22nd June, 1867
Mary Dillon - born 19th January, 1866, married James Treacy, died 9th May, 1945
James Dillon - born 1854, married Ellen McIlroy in 1886, died 1st December, 1929 in New Zealand

From reading my notes I believe the 6th child may have been a son called Patrick or a daughter Sarah. But really I'm not sure.

Any information regarding the dates of the birth, marriage, death of Charles Dillon and Jane Kyle with their children and if possible grandchildren would be absolutley fantastic and a huge help.

Warmest regards

Ashley

Offering a thought that might be useful to you........or not -

"...Charles and Jane had a son James. James left for New Zealand on the 4th November, 1875 leaving behind his brother Charles (Jr) and 4 children"

I would read this to mean -
Charles and Jane had a son James.
Charles and Jane had a son Charles, who had four children.

If Charles is identified as brother to James, then other siblings would be identified as brothers / sisters (to James), not as children to parents (Charles and Jane).

Thanks Wivenhoe. I went back to my original scribblings and it says:
Quote
Charles and Jane had a son James. James left for New Zealand on the 4th November, 1875 leaving behind his brother Charles (Jr) and 4 sisters.
Because of the significant age difference between James and his other siblings, they would've been children when James left in 1875. Though my scribblings are really word-of-mouth not fact based. I think he had 3 sisters not 4.

I will update my previous post.

Would help people to know where they lived.
On Daniel's birth 1870 their address is Friary, Reg District Ballymoney. Father Charles was a farmer.
Same details for Charles born 1867.

Hi Aghadowey, I would say it is the same family. I see one of the witnesses for Elizabeth and Daniel's marriage is Sarah Dillon. Thank you for that, great info! :)

Ashnz,

If you are a male line Dillon descendant have you considered taking a Y-DNA test to see if you can find any Dillon matches? If the Dillons are not your paternal line you could try asking a Dillon relative to take the test.

You would be able to take an autosomal test but unfortunately would not be able to take a Y-DNA test. Y-DNA is only passed down from father to son on the male line, if you were interested you could ask if a male Dillon cousin would test as a proxy for you though.

Autosomal testing basically looks at all of your DNA with the exception of the Y chromosome and the mitochondrial DNA. Autosomal DNA can help find genetic relatives on all branches of your tree going back around 5 generations. Y-DNA only finds relatives on your direct male line but can find matches going back much further to when surnames first came into use and back even further if more advanced Y-DNA testing is done.

The main DNA testing companies are "23andMe" "AncestryDNA" and "Family Tree DNA" (FTDNA). 23andMe and AncestryDNA only offer autosomal testing whereas FTDNA provide both Y-DNA and autosomal testing (https://www.familytreedna.com).

These links might help to explain it all a bit better:

I've tested my Y-DNA pretty extensively with FTDNA and have done autosomal testing so feel free to give me a message if you have any other questions about DNA testing.
