Hi all.
My great x2 grand father Dr Samuel Drury was reportedly a Dr in the Crimean War. Our extended family have a silver ink well set with writing on it saying on it 'in greatful rememberance of all your kindness and medical skill. From Captain Archibald Hay May 1952'.
how do I find out if he was in the Crimean war and where he served?
regards Scott :)

The Crimean War ran from October 1853- February1856 but Britain and France only became involved in 1854 so an inscription dated May (presume you mean 1852 not 1952) does not fit with that war
You haven't given any details of his birthyear/birthplace and when he died

Hi Carole and hanks for that.
However is it possible to check somewhere if there was a Dr S Drury involved in the Crimean War. The story has been around the family for a number of years?
thanks Scott

Try Peterkin, Johnston and Drew, Commissioned Officers in the Medical Services of the British Army.
If he's listed there you'll be able to find his qualification documents at TNA in Kew: I found those of a relative there.

Is he James Samuel Drury born in Shrewsbury abt 1822 ?
1861 census at 13 Radnor Place , Kensington
James S Drury head 39 MD London MRCP England ( transcribed as MRGP Ery )b Shrewsbury
Sophia L Drury wife 32 b London
1851 census
in the house of Thomas G Phillips 47 General Practitioner
James Drury 29 nephew MD London General Practitioner
Caroline Drury 31 sister

Edit :
There's a Captain Archibald Hay , late Captain in the 89th & 86th Regiments, who died in May 1852 in Paddington. If you don't find any army connection for Dr Drury perhaps he attended Captain Hay in his illness ?

Quite an old thread . In the light of all the information already given it would have been helpful if the OP had all least got his names and dates correct.
