I have managed to trace my Great x 9 Grandfather on my mothers side, born in Clackmannan 1669 and married to Catherine Hutcheson born 1670. They married in 1710 and had a child James in 1712 who himself married Margaret Drysdale. Is it possible to trace the Donaldson line further back or have I reached my limit with regards to records/registers kept?

All from Scotlands People 1650 - 1700
24 Births/11 Banns
Once you get beyond 1700 many of the records were lost or non existent. So although you may pick one because it seems to fit it doesn't mean it is right one.
Btw...there doesn't seem to be record for a Catherine 1669 but there is one for 1667.

If the family owned even a tiny piece of land, the Register of Sasines might take you back further. If they had dealings, e.g. as tenants, with any of the landed families whose estate records survive, there might be something. Do the records you have seen indicate what Francis did? Where precisely did he live?

Thanks for the responses.

Hi Mugsynixon:
I must have missed your reply to me.
Thanks.
My ancestor James Donaldson has parents Henry Donaldson and Margaret Carmichael and first wife Isabella Wright. Their daughter Isabella Wright Donaldson b. 1845 connects to me as my first ancestors in Canada.
Do these persons show up in your information?
Do you know of a current day Margaret Donaldson of St. Andrews?
Dave
