Title: Beatrice Mary Shanagher nee Thomas, Swansea
Post by: tomby on Wednesday 25 January 17 21:30 GMT (UK)
I am interested to know if anyone has any information on a Beatrice Mary Shanagher nee Thomas, born 1896 from Swansea.
She was married to my late grandfather.
Her parents were Joseph and Margaret Thomas.  1901 census she had 3 siblings Lizzie, Ivor and Rosalind.
Marriage certificate gives Joseph as a Mechanical Engineer.
Beatrice died in Swansea June 1965 aged appr. 69.

It's not clear whether you are researching her ancestry or looking for details of her adult life

Have you checked the 1911 census for her?

Her birth registration is on freebmd and you can check for her mothers maiden name using the info from freebmd

The marriage was in 1937 so Beatrice was then around 41yrs old

Husband Edward V Shanagher died Edmonton 1958 whereas Beatrice died in Swansea so she presumably returned to her birthplace

Edward was about 11yrs older than Beatrice

Thank you Carole.

I would be aware of most of the above data through researching the bmd records.

I would be more interested in information about her adult life.  My grandfather left her and moved to London where he remarried in 1940, so I often wondered/curious as to what became of her, and also where was she buried.

That was a short lived marriage - barely 3yrs.

His earlier marriage was even shorter - he married Ethel G Stradling in the June qtr 1935 and she died in the March qtr 1937 aged 42 then he married Beatrice approx 6mths later - all of which you already know.

The marriage to Beatrice must have broken down before 1940 so trying to find what happened to her between then and 1965 you are in a period when there are no records to show what people were doing at that time.

Her siblings will be long dead by now but may have left family in the area.

You could buy a copy of her death cert to see who reported her death but if it was one of her siblings that is not going to help you given it was 50yrs ago.

To look her up on electoral registers pre-1965 you would need to know her address and as she clearly did not re-marry that's another dead end

Shanagher is an unusual surname - particularly in Wales

To find her burial - you would need to establish exactly where she died (from her death cert) as here are all the areas covered by the Swansea RD

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/genuki/reg/districts/swansea.html

There is no probate entry for her to help with an address

Her sister Rosalind may have married in 1916 to Thomas Davies so trying to track children born to that marriage will be very difficult

Her brother was Ivor William born Dec qtr 1888 died 29.7. 1961 Swansea.  Address was Hillcote 6 Emlyn Terrace Plasmarl as per probate entry

Once again thanks Carole.

I'll have a go an see if I can get a copy of Death certificate, and see what turns up.
At the time of her marriage aged 41 her address was 2 Brynamel Tce. Bonymaen, Swansea.  Edward's address was 63 Tackbrook Street, S.W.1.

His marriage to Ethel Stradling (She was a widow) was actually his 3rd. His first wife was in Derry and 2nd was in London.  Details of which I have.

Thanks Tomby

Hi,

My name is Bruce Cool. I live in AustraliaI'm doing some research on my wife's (Cathryn)  great uncle, Edward Vincent Shanagher.  I can't find a birth certificate for him, although there is one for an Edward John Shanagher born to Denis Shanagher and Lizzie Quinn in 1884 in Belfast.  Can you tell me if they are one and the same person?

Also, I assume that Edward and Beatrice M Thomas divorced as he remarried Gladys Gardner in 1940.  I've not found a record of this divorce so far.

Would very much appreciate any help you can give me!

Cheers

Bruce

Hello from Downunder!   Thank you for confirming the middle name of Edward Shanagher.  Do you have any information or certificates for Edward's marriage to Beatrice in 1837?  I've also found in an electoral role from Hammersmith in 1931 to 1933 that he was living with a Gladys Edith surname also given as Shanagher.  I can't find a marriage record.  I'm guessing that they were living together as Edward's first wife, Mary Ward, didn't die until 1935.

I have an original marriage certificate for Ted's marriage to Gladys Gardner in 1940, and also his death certificate.  I found some interesting newspaper articles form 1924 and 1931 which show that Edward V went bankrupt in 1924, and that he subsequently left his wife and family and hadn't returned to them by 1931.  I'm happy to send scans of these and some photographs of Edward to you.

I'd love to have any further information on Ted if you have it.  My email is bjcool@bigpond.com

Kind regards,

Bruce Cool
