Title: baptism in Plymouth
Post by: poppyw on Saturday 21 January 17 16:07 GMT (UK)
I have found an entry referring to Bishop's Transcripts, Plymouth for the baptism of a child, Joseph, father James, no surnames. This is as close as I have come to finding the birth of Joseph Powell, son of James. Could someone check this please? The baptism was 19th November 1851, might be St Andrews.
Thanks

Thanks Hanes.
Rosie, yes that's them..
This the only reference I can find of Joseph. It's not critical, but annoying that I can't find him anywhere else.  ???

I am wondering whether he was James son or maybe Hannah's and not therefore a Powell.

Do you have that marriage certificate to confirm who their fathers were or have you found them on earlier census

In 1851, a Hannah HALSON and a James SANSON are servants in Uplyme. (Might be relevant)

James and Hannah were married in1857. I have looked for Joseph under Powell and Sansom, Hannah's maiden name. James was in Hawkchurch in 1841 and 51, Hannah was in Axminster at the time of their marriage and in Uplyme in 1841. I don't know where she was in 1851, but she was in Uplyme in 1841.

A James SANSOM married Hannah HALSON or HALSOM Dec qtr 1851 Axminster regn district. A James SANSOM died in 1853 aged 33.
Is it possible that Hannah was a widow when she married James POWELL? Have you got her father's details from the 1857 marriage certificate?

The birth of Henry James Powell in 1860 gives mothers maiden name as Sansam.   James Powell married Hannah Sansom Dec qtr 1857 Axminster RD.
I would think that you need that marriage certificate to get details of their fathers just in case she had misunderstood the 'maiden name' question when registering the birthb
