Title: SUMMER HILL near Orange NSW
Post by: Jaznjjj on Saturday 14 January 17 08:27 GMT (UK)
I am trying to identify this location/property which I believe is at or near Summer Hill Creek outside of Orange, NSW.  I think the second word is "farm".  So could be something like "-insliter's Farm".  The original document (a will) appears to be water-damaged so very difficult to read.
Thank you, J.

HI J

The names of the people you are searching that connect to this property may help locate the property.

I don't know that these people actually owned the property but the names I have in connection with the document (Will of Thomas Astill) are:

Thomas Astill (died 6/6/1854) and his wife Mary
John West (son-in-law of Thomas) wife probably also Mary
Joseph Cantrill

Thanks,
J

I am relying on memory to find several online links, and so I have not yet 'back tracked back to 1850s,  ::)  ::) perhaps only back to late 1860s.

SUMMER HILL CREEK Public School was in the :
Parish of March
County of Wellington
Land District of Orange
Pastures Protection District of Bathurst
Local Government Authority of Canoblas Shire

Summer Hill Creek is also in the Parish of Clinton & Orange, and the County of Bathurst.

See  http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=678243.0

Then consider searching the online historic parish maps at Land & Property Info (currently a free website, but LPI is to be privatised, so best get to the parish maps asap.).
http://www.lpi.nsw.gov.au/land_titles/historical_research/parish_maps

You could also try NSW State Archives, https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/archives/collections-and-research/guides-and-indexes/indexes-a-z

Could be another week before I have full access to all my offline NSW resources (lent some of the Central West ones to a reliable rellie  ;D )   I am sure that ASTILL was among the Pioneer families with freehold land in the Canoblas district.   I think WEST was more towards Bathurst.   :D

 SUMMER HILL CREEK
A watercourse about 42 km long. It rises about 2 km east of Millthorpe and flows generally NNW then ENE into Lewis Ponds Creek at Ophir.

Found William Astill (son of Thomas) in County Bathurst, Police District orange and John West County Wellington, Police District Orange in a list of electors in 1856.

Have been trying to zero in on the death of Thomas Astill (died 6/6/1854) but whose death does not seem to appear in NSW BDM.  At SRO today skimmed through the burials for 1854 and Orange was noticeably absent so wondering where the original parish registers are.  A look at the Nick Vine-Hall book yielded nothing.  Probate packet confirms date of death and earlier researchers were able to find his date of death on his headstone at Orange (which possibly no long exists or is no longer legible) as I haven't been able to bring it up on cemeteries search.

The will is interesting being written on a small piece of paper and, according to the supporting documentation in the probate packet, dictated by Thomas to John West (including the signature).

Have just started exploring the maps.  Thank you.   J

P.S.  Astill descendants number in the thousands.

Hi,

NSW State Archives have two files but from the 1890s, and one of those files is the deceased estate, locality Tumbarumba - long way from Summer Hill Creek both in decades and distance... BUT the files are for a chap surnamed KINSTLER ... perhaps that's the elusive name.   If the 'farm' was named after the property owner, then we need to remember that 'foreigners' needed to become naturalised British Subjects to obtain title to land.  So perhaps a search through the NSW State Archives index of naturalisations etc may turn up some possibles too.

Anyway, I used their keyname search option and entered KINS% (% as a wild card) to spot KINSTLER.  There's lots of other surnames there starting with KINS, and of course you can use the % and then add letters after it too.

I'll put that deceased estate record on my 'to do' list for next visit to SRO.

A bit of a sideline but I investigated the HENLEN family who came from Germany to Bathurst in the 1850s. Not part of my family.  I was searching for a Mary Ann HENLEN who married in Bathurst to Joseph FAWCETT and the German family looked like a promising match until I did the math with their arrival date.  I believe that the goldrush saw many immigrants from places other than the U.K.  Perhaps Kinstler was part of that.

Hi J

I did a quick search on Ancestry, found a tree with a photo of Thomas Astill.

Enjoy

HI J

Looks like they had some influence in the town, with a retirement village with the family name.

Astill Court, Orange. http://www.upa.org.au/Locations/CentralWest/AstillCourtOrange.aspx

it maybe that this is build on what was the farm. maybe worth an email to the local council.

I have Peter's book, which is no longer in print.  I am in touch with Peter and he is considering other ways of making the book available to interested persons.  The book is about 400 pages of tree and text and I've been able to assist other Astill descendants by referring to Peter's book. There is also an Astill tree by Ken Black which is parallel but not exactly the same and available as a download.  Peter and Ken apparently did some of the research together.

There are many Astill descendants and quite a number of them are also researchers.  Several decades past I attended an Astill reunion at Orange.  Astill family members came out on three or four different ships, settled in the Orange area and started populating the countryside.  Not sure where Astill Court fits in so I'll have a look at the link, thank you.

Re: Cantrill & Astill families Borenore, Orange district.
I don't know when this original post was placed but I just happened on it. My gt. gt. grandparents (Whitehead) came from Borenore & both your families are mentioned in a few documents that I have as they had adjoining properties. I'm sure that I have some photocopies of some school pics of some of the family (not very good). Please let me know if your interested & I will look them out.
Cheers,
Skipper

Hi Skipper, I would be very interested to view those photographs please.  I will send you a message with my email address.  There are very many Astill and Cantrill descendants (the Astill millions are people, not dollars!) and quite a few of those descendants are also researching the family so with your permission I will pass any information along.  I will have to dive into my records to remind myself which particular Astills/Cantrills were at Borenore as my Astill research has been sitting idle for some time.  This might just be what I need to get kick-started again!

Peter Cantrill died a couple or more years ago.  Ken Black has also produced an "Astill" book similar but not the same as Peter's.

Kind regards, Jennifer

Hi, I noticed on one of your posts that you were talking about the book that Peter Cantrill wrote re the Astill family.
Peter got in touch with me when he was writing the book, but I lost his details when I moved.
My maiden name was Astill & I am directly related to Thomas & James Astill. My grandfather was Thomas Clement Astill.
I did see that Peter’s book was published & there is a copy in the National Library in Canberra.
I spoke to Peter’s wife, unfortunately he passed away a while back.
I have been in touch with Orange library & they have been trying to get me a copy of the book, but I thought I saw on a post of yours that you managed to get it? I’d love to get one if I could. Would it be possible for you to let me know whether you did obtain it & if you did where you got it from?
I live near Bundaberg in Queensland Australia.

Thanks
Desley Brown (née Astill)
