Hi there,
It's been a while since I have visited. I have met a stumbling block with my GGGG who, with his wife was known to be in Barrhead in 1845. His name is Michael Hughes and her name was Ann/e Tierney (?). Wondering how I get to investigate them further and in particular find out whereabouts in Ireland they originated from. I am thinking potato famine too!

Hi
A lot of Irish immigrants came over to work in mines and mills but also claimed poor relief whilst they were getting settled. The Poor Books are a brilliant source and may tell you where in Ireland they came from - certainly did for my folks in Paisley (next door to Barrhead).
However they're not online and not sure where Barrhead's poor books are held so would suggest you contact East Renfrewshire Library services. They may do look up requests
Best Wishes

Hi Ann,
Mine are all in Paisley too! Trouble is I am in Australia. It seems Paisley all began from an Irish immigrant in Barrhead!!! Thanks for your help.

I'm from Paisley and my dad was from Barrhead but I don't live there these days . But there were a lot of Irish people came over to Renfrewshire as a result of the famine.
Paisley will do look ups via email in poor books so that may be a possible route to try
Best Wishes

Hi Jack
I don't live in Paisley these days and only there every couple of months or so to see my mum. If I can help via online sources happy to do that but visiting the library etc whilst I can do it is when I'm up there.
If not dead urgent happy to go look for you next time I'm home - probably end Feb/early March
Best Wishes

A few children show up in the Catholic Registers on Scotlands People with father Michael mother Anne Tierney /Turney that matches in with children I posted ...There is a death for a Michael Hughes 1875 Barrhead age 54 which could be him as he is not in the 1881 census ...Death Certificate should give you his parents names
