After many years of searching for our nans birth and place of birth I have at last proof of her family being in Greater Grimsby at the time of her birth. Her father worked for the railway and the family had moved from area to area over a number of years until they settled in Derby. All of my nans siblings births have been registered at their time of birth but not nans. She had always told us she was born in Grimsby but after she died we could not find a birth certificate. Since then we have found her and her siblings of various ages all being baptised together in Derby nan being 11yrs old at that time and census records stating she was born in Grimsby. We had been able to pinpoint her family over many years at various places but could not until now prove that they had been in Grimsby at the time of nans birth. Through a news paper clipping of her father being fined for not having a dog license in Grimsby 1896 and also an address with him on in the electoral register for that time also we have proof of the Grimsby connection but how can I now try to find her birth reg when all other attempts have failed. My nans name was Jessie Louise Churchyard her date of birth given 12th Aug 1895. Her father was Alfred James Churchyard born 1862/3 Yoxford her mother was Sarah Louise Churchyard nee Coldham born about 1867 West Dereham. The address in Grimsby was 24 Dover Street , West Marsh Grimsby. They had left Grimsby by 1897 and moved to Notts him still working for the railway as a signal man at that time. Any idea's anyone please.

The 1939 register also has her birthday as 12 August, but her year of birth as 1894. :-\

Hi
1901 has them in Derby, he was a "Brewer's Drayman"
Family name transcribed as "Churchard"
I notice that Jessie's mother married as Louisa Sarah Coldham, 1886 Holborn

The 1939 register also has her birthday as 12 August, but her year of birth as 1894. :-\
Her death registration also suggests she was born 12 Aug 1894.

Whoops yes 1894 and yes her father did work as a brewers drayman also he was still employed by the railway in 1907/8 when they lived at Old Uttoxceter Rd in Derby . On some of nans siblings birth certificates her mothers forenames alternate sometimes Louise first sometimes Sarah though she was always called by the name Sarah apparently. Thanks

Was she, by any chance, born before her parents married so that her birth registration is in the maiden name of her mother?

Hi Lizzie fraid not they were all born after her parents had married we have all the other certificates and marriage license nan was the third to be born ( think I have that right.) Thanks for all interest in this.

I only have a couple of suggestions.
1. That as her mum came from Holborn in London, it could be that she was visiting relatives and went into labour and your gran was born in Holborn and they registered the birth there or they returned to Grimsby and thought they couldn't register the birth there and didn't want to return to London.
2. Or perhaps your gran or her mum were ill around the time of birth and they just forgot to register her birth.

Hi
[ Agree with LizzieW ]
Could be very simple, everyone thought that someone else . . . . .
Would you publish FULL details of the marriage?
Her father . . . . . "also he was still employed by the railway in 1907/8"
needs explanation/documented proof? On what do you base the comment?
If she was born "Holborn", yes, it is more than possible that her birth was not registered "correctly".
So are we saying that "Jessie" went all thru her life without needing to legally prove who she was?
How do you know that her real name wasn't "Harriet Jessie Louise. . . . ."

Yes it is possible as both the Churchyard and Coldham families had connections all over really. I believe Sarah Coldhams parents ended up in Rotherham. ??? Thanks for your input

Hello Ray.
The marriage was at St. Peters church Clerkenwell 4th Feb 1886.
Alfred James Churchyard bachelor age 23 occupation Cooper 36 Crompton Buildings Holborn father James Churchyard Tile Maker.
Louisa Sarah Coldham spinster age 18 36 Crompton Buildings father Thomas Coldham and in brackets it says Dead.
Witnesses were Walter Levington or Levingston and Margaret Maria Wright.
On some of the birth certificates of nans siblings Alfreds occupations are as follows 1887-91 Cooper Journeyman.
1897-1898 Railway Signalman Bedfordshire ( also in the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants records for 1897 listed as Signalman. Also in the Grimsby court case of 1886 ( news paper snippet fined for not having a dog license ) he is reported as being a Railway signal man.
1900 Railway Porter at Colwick Notts on birth certificate.
1901 Brewers Drayman Derby
1907/8 in court in Derby for stealing potatoes recorded as railway employee along with another chap ( Derby news paper )
1911 census Carter for Railway
When he died in 1922 he was employed as a Gas works carter
His family on his mothers side had pubs and beerhouses from when he was born in Suffolk and later in Bedfordshire. he moved on from there but his siblings and mother remained in Bedfordshire.
Louisa<> Sarah Coldham was born in West Dereham Suffolk according to census records but that's another mystery ah ! Her father Thomas Coldham I have traced in that area but it seems he may not have been (dead ) when the marriage took place. I believe her family moved to Rotherham where her mother died in the late 1880's 90's and her father in about 1917 but all that bit is another sleuth. Thanks for your time.

Daisy - West Dereham is in Norfolk, near Downham Market, so quite a way from Suffolk. Maybe that's why the birth details have been hard to find?

Hello Roopat yes I know West Dereham and have traced most of the Coldham line , I meant to say Norfolk. The Bishops transcripts and searchable church records on line for Norfolk record most of the family births and baptisms for the Coldhams through the years when Louisa Sarah Coldham was born. Her parents and the rest of their off spring are recorded. We did wonder if she had been Baptised / registered with different Christian names as their are quite a few that would match her birth year. As for my nan we have scoured the birth registers on line with other Christian names but none match up with the date of birth or area she is supposed to have been born in. Confusing. Thanks for your input.

Hello again Ray. Why do you mention the name Harriet , not heard of that name before. Is there a birth mentioned anywhere with that Christian name ? I will go and do a search on the birth registers and try it if so. Many thanks

Grimsby library have a database of parish records - and microfilm of the record books, you could ring them and see if there's a christening record, and get a copy of that - might throw more light on things. The spelling / name on the christening might give a clue to that on the birth registration.

Hello thanks for that, her and her siblings were all baptised within a few weeks of each other when they eventually settled in derby. My nan was 11 at that time. Is being Baptised the same as being christened ? sorry to appear dim I don't know.
