I was noticing a James Sempill M.D, buried in St. Patrick's Gateway Centre along with his wife Anna and his granddaughter Nicholona. He was an Alderman of Limerick and served in the Waterford Independents 2nd Regiment. He died 10th June 1806. His grave was erected by his daughter Elizabeth Anderson.
I noticed there was a James Sempill who served as Mayor of Waterford in 1797 and again in 1799. I am wondering if these could be the same person, given the name but I can't find the connection

I know that and I already mentioned that in my post. I am wondering if Mayor James Sempill of Waterford is the same person.

His death was reported in the Limerick Chronicle

Only says he was an Alderman, you would expect it would say former Mayor, if it was the same man.
Of course that is only a one line transcript there could be more.

Yes there is an obit in newspaper but it doesn't answer the question so I didn't bother with it.
The Wills possibly have the answer.

That's where I learned he was an alderman, granted given it is a Limerick newspaper they might not have bothered with any non-local details.

The following obituary is a bit strange if he was mayor.
The Caledonian Mercury of 23 June 1806 carried it, it was a fulsome tribute to 'James Sempill, Esq. M.D.' who died 'at an advanced age' in his house in the Mall, Waterford, it confirms that he was 'father-in-law to our much respected countryman, John Anderson, Esq. of Fermoy' and describes James as 'one of the Aldermen of the Corporation of Waterford' (I think the Alderman references in this topic so far have been to Alderman of Limerick?). There are bits of glowing testimony about his life, which the inhabitants of Waterford witnessed 'for upwards of 40 years'.
But it doesn't mention that he was mayor.

Those letters M.D. up the ante a good bit, what are the chances there were 2 James Sempills and both of them doctors? Slim I would think.
But what a weird obituary not to mention that...

It is strange, the chances of two doctors with the same name living in the same city but also being part of city council seems quite slim. It is strange that the obituary doesn't mention he was mayor just his role as an Alderman, still learning he is an alderman of Waterford does help with the local connection.
Maybe he was an alderman at the time of his death hence it was mentioned in the obituary.
Still the fact they might be the same person is very interesting
