I have been having some trouble with a branch of my mother's paternal family. Her gr grandmother was Blanche Frances Humby (m. Horner). For the longest time I was stymied with her parentage until by chance I found she was born to Mathew Humby and Caroline Short. I had previously thought she was born to Elizabeth Humby / Jones but it appears as though she was paternal aunt, not mother. By census info they were born in Portsmouth, Mathew ~1824 and Elizabeth ~1817. I cannot find birth records for the anywhere, and I mean that literally - I completely cleared our any and all location filters and still couldn't find birth/christening records anywhere in the world (familysearch.org). Can someone help me figure out where they were born, specific dates, parentage etc.? Blanche had 3 siblings I could find in records, but it appears the parents died early and the surviving kiddies bounced around between other family. She started with a maternal aunt Elizabeth Gould before settling in for the duration with paternal aunt Elizabeth Jones, even to the point of being shown as daughter Blanche Jones in census records. It would mean a lot if more could be figured out on the Humby side. TIA!

Are you searching for the parents of Matthew + Caroline?

I expect so. I have Caroline's parents, grandparents (one side, the missing side doesn't know if they're Stringnell or Strugnell yet), & 1 gr grandfather. I have NO birth registrations for the Humby side (Mathew or sister Elizabeth), therefore no parents. :(

I am unsure about this. Later census' gave Elizabeth's age where she would have been born ~1817 so for an 1841 census she would have been ~24, not 20.

ages in 1841 census are rounded down to the nearest 5 years
so if she was between age 20-25 her age would have been rounded down to 20

A lot of great information, but I still haven't found birth/christening records for Mathew and Elizabeth. :( I *have been getting in and finding sib info though.

Elizabeth Humby is actually James Humby's wife. She was born Elizabeth Cummings 1822-1904. They were married on 09 April 1841 at St Mary's, Portsea. James Humby's father Joseph Humby is my 5th Great Grandfather. James was never baptized.
-
Oh really? Joseph is my 4x gr grandfather through Mathew’s daughter Blanche.
-
Mine is through his Son Joseph (Whiffen) Humby 1810-1883. My Great Grandmother was Nellie Henrietta Humby who's 1st husband was Percy Victor Humby - Their son was my Grandfather

Huh. I didn’t have a lot of info on those cousin lines. One of my mother’s cousins (the Horners were in the Swanmore/Droxford area) actually went back to Swanmore in the 80s and met a few of the remaining uncles and their families. One of them was actually in the paper for being 103 years old and still in the family home; she died in 2016. My gr grandfather was #9 or 10 out of 17 (15 survived to adulthood) and 6 of them made their way across the ocean. This is relevant only because Blanche Humby married George Walter Horner and they were my 2x gr grandparents.

That's very interesting as Nellie died in Droxford in 1972. She remarried after the death of her first husband so was Nellie Henrietta Grant.
