Hi all
I know that he was a twin born on 18th February 1922. His brother was Sidney Elias Defries. I have tracked Sidney's descendants but they don't know too much about Benjamin.
So Benjamin born in Bow Tower Hamlets 18th Feb 1922
Died Kingston Hospital 27th Feb 2001. Death cert witnessed by Sister in law (sidneys wife) now deceased
He was a civil servant and he or other family members lived at 59 Sandringham Road Worcester Park Surrey
What happened to him between 1922 and 2001. There is a Benjamin Arthur defries shown as getting married in 1970 , but this is the wrong person. Did he get married ? did he have any children? (if he did , why did sister in law appear on death cert)
1939 register shows family living at 185 Bow Common Lane Stepney
1974 death cert for his mother shows 59 sandringham road Worcester park as well.
I seem to have a lot of information but I am getting nowhere
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Hi Luke,
Have you considered purchasing a copy of Benjamin's Will to see if it holds any clues? -
Probate date 2 May 2001

Hi JJ
That's what I like about roots chat. Sometimes you get so close to things, that you cant see the wood for the trees.
Great suggestion and yes he did leave a will. Here goes another £10
many thanks

A death cert in 2001 (I think) should say if he was widowed/bachelor etc. At least if the informant (sister in law) knew. What does it say?
-
Many thanks Ladyhawk and Liz
Liz. Death cert only says sister in law but it looks as though she was also living at Sandringham Road in 2001 as Sidney had passed away earlier. She passed away a few months after Benjamin
Ladyhawk
So we know in 1946 he was still in Bow, by the time we get to 1967 he is living in Worcester park with his mother Matilda. So it looks as though he stayed there till his death in 2001. So in his late 40's he was living at home with his mother, so it seems reasonable to assume he wasn't married
As JJ suggested I have applied for his will, I get the impression this wont be overly helpful.
Does anyone have the address for where electoral registers for Kingston are kept as it may be worth a visit. Or are these records available on ancestry
many thanks

Or perhaps you could try Surrey History Centre

For info.
his father Henry’s death in 1964 address was of The Brittannia 185 Bow Street Lane
years 1912 – 1915
Benjamin Defries – no middle name or initial
185 Bow Common
The above entry must be his grandfather who died 1922,
his grandmother Flora who died 1932 was also at that address with Matilda & Henry

Hi Ladyhawk
Many thanks for all your contributions. Info relating to 185 Bow Common Lane all accurate.
It looks as though the Surrey info is held at the Surrey history Centre in Woking. I think I will wait and see what Benjamin 's will says before I plan my next step.
Co-incidentally I received an e-mail from Benjamins nephew (Sidneys son) to say that his late sister started a family tree , which has gone missing since her passing. He says that he and her husband will make a concerted effort to find the tree.
Hopefully things are starting to fall into place
Many thanks

Hi ladyhawk
Just a quick update . Sandringham Road is actually covered by Sutton Council
If you type into google- Britannia pub- 185 Bow common lane. takes you to an interesting web site showing names of publicans at the end pub. Defries was there for many years
