On the 1851 Census is a Thomas Goode whose occupation was shown as "Chinaman and Tax Collector".
Is a "Chinaman" someone dealing or trading in china and why would they also be a "Tax Collector" ? Surely there must have been a conflict of interest ? What sort of tax might he have been responsible for collecting ?
Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Can't decipher it but does he appear on other census with the same occupation - hopefully easier to make out?

Could he possibly have been a 'chainman' a trade associated with surveying ? :)

Where is he is 1861 and what occupation?
Tree and probate record has a death in 1870 and mentions a china and glass shop if this is the same man. Address seems to be the same :)

He was living in 19 South Audley Street, with two servants and a Lord Bateman, peer of the realm, as a lodger. 19 South Audley Street is the home of Thomas Goode & Co china and glassware store, established in 1827. http://thomasgoode.com/
