Title: "Who Do You Think You Are" Series 13, Episode #2: Amanda Holden
Post by: LizzieW on Thursday 01 December 16 23:00 GMT (UK)
I can't see any threads about this yet.  I thought it was really interesting, even if she was a bit over the top with her exclamations of surprise.  It was noted that on the French side of the family it was the women that the vineyard passed to.  I assume Amanda's ancestor wasn't the eldest daughter so she didn't get the vineyard, or because she'd moved to England it passed to another sister.

The story about the shipwreck was an eye opener, there is no way anything like that could be kept a secret nowadays with everyone having a 'phone with a camera, and using facebook etc.

I enjoyed this episode!
Two interesting threads in the 1 programme.

I was particularly interested in the French theme - as (allegedly!) I have French blood in me, somewhere?!

Closest I've got is a Jersey birth :)

I enjoyed it too. Loved the French story and I think she came across really well.

This sheds more light on the Lancastria story - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-33092351 and http://ww2today.com/17th-june-1940-the-lancastria-bombed-and-sunk

There's lots more on the internet

It's often been said that many apparent loose assumptions in WDYTYA are corroborated off-screen as it were, but I thought they were putting a lot of faith in the age listed in the 1841 census for Collin Thomas, working back to assumptions he was apprentice at 10 and joined the Navy at 15.

Was anybody else shouting at the telly during that bit?

Yes Gerry I thought the same with the ages! Wonder if they knew from the baptism that it was 1791ish but just skipped that part as they weren't focusing on taking the line backwards.

Really interesting episode, found Collin's story fascinating, and found myself googling the Lancastria afterwards.

Agree with everyone.

Plus that's a lovely part of France.

Yes I was shouting at the you tube video when it showed the 1841 census. I was surprised they did not mention the + and -  of the age by 5 years.  I must say I enjoyed the episode.

Aside from my amazement at how TV celebrities behave on camera, ( :o ) I enjoyed the programme too, and found both threads very interesting, despite the Lancastria being such "recent" history, but I was really disappointed they did not show the link through the French family to the name Louis which was then used for so many generations.

Oh, and BTW, up popped the name "Radigund".  Fancy that!!  :)

And we were never told whether she took how many bottles of wine she took home (from what had been her family's vineyard)

This might answer some of your questions about the programme.

Sorry when I shrunk the link and tried it before posting, it didn't work.

There was some stuff in the papers about the Lancastria, some survivor stories were published at the time.  It just didn't make major/national "horror headline" status.

There are hundreds of results for it, with the survivor stories.  One boy saved his 72 year old grandmother; one soldier got married that weekend + survivor guests; others were rescued after floating in the water for X hours.  One survived, but was shot two months later by a fellow soldier in a regular argument that got out of hand.

And a Mrs Tate of of Covent Garden Garth - with SIXTEEN children - thinks her husband must've been on it and died as she's no idea where he is. Husband = Pte. William Tate aged 40.

It just wasn't "huge news" or "the month of the sinking" - but mostly smaller stories a month later.

They had to publish something after it first appeared in American newspapers.

This episode really restored my faith in WDYTYA. Recent series have been a bit disappointing: either staying close to last century or doing the 'related to royalty' bit, which makes me yawn with boredom. I still think last week's was ridiculous, but I suppose it takes all sorts!  :-\

Amanda Holden isn't someone I know much about except the obvious, so I was pleasantly surprised to find her genuinely interested (I don't think it was 'put on') and such a delightful person. Her reactions made me smile all through the episode.

Oh, and it was so nice to see so much documentation and to go back quite a few generations without mentioning William the Conqueror or any other king or queen. Long may it last!

Yes, me!  Overall I really enjoyed this one though - I much prefer the tales of 'ordinary' folk to the tedious stories of connections to royalty.

I can relate to Mandy Holden as I have French ancestors who came over hundreds of years after the Normans. I have Huguenots and my latest born French ancestor was one of the last Huguenot immigrants in the early 1750s.

Much better than the links to royalty, which, sorry to throw cold water on your bonfire Lord Dyer but something millions of Brits have if you go back far enough, whether proven or not.

I was also shouting at the television, especially when they found the documents saying he was 17, but rather than questioning it, it was dismissed with "That's wrong, he must have lied about his age." I suppose it makes better television, a boy of 15 joining up.

I enjoyed the programme though, as Amanda seemed really interested in her ancestors as people rather than whether they had money or were descended from Royalty. I thought the scenes with her mother at the beginning were nice as her mother had already looked at the tree and made some discoveries. Pity that she didn't go with Amanda to France.

Perhaps they had looked at familysearch and knew he was born on 1 January 1790 and baptised on 24 January 1790.

I liked the programme and there are a few people on Ancestry who will know be able to take their trees a little further back with three generations of the French side of the family.

Whilst the part of the programme on her grandfather and the sinking of the Lancastria was important from a historical point of view it was also very sad and i felt we were intruding on private grief and wounds that had not yet healed.

We mostly saw the connections to those who survived the sinking of the Lancastria. Most events of the war were sad and caused grief to many families. That's probably a good enough reason for them to be explained, so as to avoid such events in future.

My mum was at school with someone who lost their father on the Lancastria, so it was no secret at the time. She was also told that my grandma had, at the last minute, turned down the chance of sending her and my aunt to Canada on the City of Benares.

That wouldn't make him 15 in 1841.

No and as far as I know no one said he was. The 1841 census that was shown said he was 50 which he near enough was at the time.

I think you are perhaps getting confused with his army enrollment c1806 when he said he was 17 but was 15(ish)

No problem. the programme zips along at times and its easy to mistake dates at times because of this (done it myself at times).

I enjoyed the show and thought it was a good episode to follow Danny's. However, there was very little research done by Amanda and the 1841 Census part did have me a bit annoyed (like a few people on here). It was nice to see her interested in her family past but did seem a bit rushed to go straight back to Collin Thomas and the French connection. A decent episode though!  :)

I suppose the problem is that, as people who are interested in genealogy, we are used to working back gradually, generation by generation looking at each person. We know from experience that most led ordinary lives, of no interest to anyone apart from the immediate family. That would make for a very boring television programme, so the producers just settle on the one or two people in the tree who have led an exciting life.

Danny Dyer (who? I don't watch Eastenders) and Amanda Holden - first two episodes in what looks like an interesting series!  I'm pleased to see deliberate traction back up though the generations, rather than the last few series where quite often the focus was on just one individual or a particular situation.

I'm glad Amanda Holden was able to make contact with her father's side of the family - let's hope it might heal a family rift if she keeps up with them!
