Hello,
I am putting this question here as the Lakin alias Townsend folk seem to be more numerous in this county than neighbouring counties where they also appear.
I am looking for information or descendants of anyone with Lakin alias Townsend (and vice versa) in their tree as I suspect a connection to my Lakin family of Tamworth who attended the Cole Hill presbyterian chapel in Warwickshire from 1703. I am struggling to find enough records to follow the families fully (using Ancestry, Find My Past and free resources). I'm particularly interested in Josiah Lakin alias Townsend from Orton on the Hill as he has a Thomas born about the same time as my elusive Thomas Lakin, in 1694 (and also has a Benjamin which is in my Lakin family). I suspect the families from Orton and Twycross spread out into Warwickshire and Staffordshire, and may also connect to the landed gentry Lakin's of Hall End.
I could be completely on the wrong track but I'd like to have a try, to at least eliminate a line of enquiry, and as a last resort before I consider going down the expensive track of professional research.
Thank you.

This probably doesn't help, but some years ago I considered whether the Lakin alias Townsend family could be connected with my Townsend problem.
Briefly, I want to discover the origins of my ancestor, Erasmus Townsend, a basket maker who married at Lenton, Nottinghamshire in 1638. Since a potential father, another Erasmus Townsend, was buried at Buckminster, Leicestershire in 1640, I searched quite a lot in Leicestershire records,
including the Bishop's Transcripts. In the course of that, I came across a George and a Thomas (I think) Lakin alias Townsend, and others, but I found no connection with any Erasmus.
This was all pre-1650, so it is probably too early for your problem, but if you had any specific queries as far back as that, I could dig out my old search notes.

Hello John,
Thank you for your reply. This could be relevant as my research dates before 1700.
I have Thomas Lakin of Tamworth, born 1695 (this date is based on his marriage licence which gives his age as 22 in 1717). He married well, his wife Elizabeth Battman having links to the Greysbrooke and Colemore families who are landed gentry. Their children were baptised at Cole Hill Presbyterian, Warwickshire, where several other Lakins show up in the early 1700s, including those of Hall End, who were also of some standing. I can't positively link Thomas to any of the families in the vicinity even though there were plenty of Lakins in Tamworth and Polesworth and surrounds.
In the course of research I have come across the Lakin alias Townsend families of Leicestershire and suspect some of them crossed counties and later dropped the Townsend. Some of the earlier records in Warwickshire still show a number of Lakin alias Townsend folk in the mid 1600s, but by the 1700s the extra name seems to have died out. So the time period I would be working back from to get the connection to Thomas, if any, would be the late 1600s however if anything in your notes tie in with any of this I would be grateful if you had any information. I am relying heavily on basic Leicestershire records on Ancestry and Familysearch.
Many thanks.

One of very few records I noted as late as 1695 was from Phillimore's marriages for Leicestershire (vol. 12: Aylestone with Glen Parva and Lubbesthorpe) regarding a marriage, 29 December 1696, between John Townsend and Elizabeth Lakin, of Lubbesthorpe, by licence; I made a further note that John Townsend, 1656, was married before a justice. Lubbesthorpe lies a few miles to the S.W. of Leicester.
My earlier notes include three Lakin alias Townsend marriages at Norton by Twycross and my abstract of the P.C.C. will of George Laykin alias Townsend, a yeoman of Donnington Park. He was buried at Castle Donnington on 15 January 1625/6 (source: B.T.'s).

That is interesting. Though the Lakin Townsend link does go back a lot further, as there is George's will in 1626. I think he may be one the earliest documented person with that name. There is a Randall Lakin alias Townsend at Orton on the Hill, having children from 1605. Perhaps most of the others which come later are descended from a few in this vicinity.
