Title: REBECCA MAZORKOFF
Post by: steve62 on Thursday 24 November 16 16:46 GMT (UK)
Back on a branch left a few years ago and having problems.

Rebecca Mazorkoff (c.1901 Liverpool) married Marcus Marks (c.1901 England) on 04/09/1927 in Ontario.
Looked ( I think) just about everywhere and cannot find  if they had children or when they died or census.
As a matter of interest I have found it very hard to trace the Mazorkoff Family in the UK and Canada due to the mis-spelling of the surname.  Used wildcards - the lot.

Really appreciate some guidence.

Thanks

Steve

Sandra,
Thank you very much for the info.
Dolly?  Not as far as I know.  All UK records show Rebecca only.
Looks like I've got another brickwall.

Grateful for your time.

It didn't sound like another brick wall to me - this sounded like your couple - Dolly could have been a pet name - the same couple are shown on later voters list as Marcus/Rebecca at same address  ???
We also know that Rebecca disappeared between 1965 - 1972 because she wasn't listed on the last voters list.
Privacy laws in Canada are quite strict which makes it difficult to find information.  Perhaps Run Kitty (the Canadian Obit Expert)  might find obituaries for the couple.

I had a great aunt Dolly, it wasn't until she died that we actually knew that her real name was Mary Elizabeth!

A Marcus and Rebecca Marks arrived from Montreal on R.M.S. Ivernia at Greenock, Scotland on 28 July 1960 for a 5 week visit. He was described as a sportswear op., she as a housewife.  What look like dates of birth were recorded, 3 June 1901 for him, 31 December 1901 for her. The address in the UK given for their visit was 50 Hardwick St. Prescott St. Liverpool. (BTW, they returned on the Carinthia on 7 September, her DOB was now given as 31 February 1901, he was described as a sportswear operator, and the visit address was 50 Hardwick St. Off Prescott St. Liverpool).

This may be the couple posted by Sandra, do the dates of birth / address do anything for you?

... What look like dates of birth were recorded, 3 June 1901 for him, 31 December 1901 for her ...

I can see births that are in the ballpark for these folk:

- Marcus Marks registered in Jul/Aug/Sep 1901, Prestwich, volume 8d, page 820;
- Rebecca Mazorkoff registered in Jan/Feb/Mar 1902, Liverpool, volume 8b, page 84.

... cannot find if they had children ...

Should these folk turn out to be the correct ones (it looks promising), simply googling 133 Winnett Avenue will bring back a hit on this.

Sandra,
Thanks for additional info.
Yes I agree it is them and that it could have been a "pet name".  By "brickwall" I meant it takes time to find info outside the UK and sometimes nothing turns up due to names being transcribed wrongly.  I have a "Boaler" in the UK who was transcribed as "Boular". Found it with wildcards.

Thanks again for all your help.

gaffy,
Thanks for all that info and they are mine.  As regards Rebecca and date of Birth I have UK documents  with 1901 and 1902.  She was probally born 31/12/1901 and registered in January 1902.  Marcus is correct and he was born in Prestwich.

Thanks for your time.

Steve,

I'll assume you have a copy of their marriage.

They were probably members of the Kiever Synagogue in the Kensington Market area between Bathurst and Spadina.  It was the Russian Synagogue and not that far from where they lived. And given their trade they likely worked in the Clothing District a few blocks away.  If you can't find anything in the Toronto Star archives I would suggest you contact the Ontario Jewish Archives ojainquiries@ujafed.org

Hi Steve,

Rebecca is my wife's grandmother (and Marcus is her grandfather).  The information on this thread is accurate.  Rebecca's parents I have traced back to Joseph Mazerkoff and Rachel (nee Cutner).

Hi Smoose,
That is very interesting.  My g.father Lazarus Goldstein married in Liverpool, a daughter of Joseph, Leah Mazorkoff and they went to the USA where they  eventually divorced and she remarried and she divorced again and remarried.
I have about four pages in book form on  my computer with a lot of info through the years and generations.
I would love to exchange info and find out more info if you consent.  I can send you the four pages I have written if you send me your e-mail address by "PM".
