Claude William Bradbury's birth was registered in Leicester in the SQ of 1910. His parents were William James's Bradbury and Elise Dorothee Louise Bradbury (née Juhrs or Jürs).
His older sister Phyllis Dorothy Bradbury died unmarried in Leicester in 1984, but at some point the family had moved to Hampshire. William James died in Hampshire, perhaps as early as 1919. and Louise died in Bournemouth in 1977. Claude's brother Dennis Edwin died in Southampton in 1974.
What happened to Claude? Apart from one entry in the Hamburg passenger lists prior to 1935, I cannot find him in the U.K.
Thanks.
-
Phyllis left a will - may mention Claude https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/#wills
-
Just posting this info in case anybody else does the same search.
He is NOT the 1942 death in Tonbridge. That death can also be found on www.cwgc.org and relates to a Claud b Keighley
-
Thanks Carole.
It may come down to buying one of the Wills, but this is a twig to be honest and I was hoping I might be able to tie up this loose end without lashing out on a Will.
-
Looks like there may be another sister too - Joan born 1918.
-
A~ says John S and I can't find it on the GRO Index. It won't let me past 1917, but I can see a marriage for a Joan S B~ in Leicester in 1942. I'll follow that through and see where it takes me.
-
Try FreeBMD (.org.uk).
This volunteer-run project has transcribed the GRO Indexes.
Almost 100% coverage up to 1940's; less so thereafter.
-
Free BMD confirms it is Joan. Thanks. Their coverage has obviously improved markedly since the last time I used the site.
-
It's an ongoing project!
And still looking for volunteer transcribers? <hint!>

Phyllis Dorothy died 9/3/1984 of Flat 25 Milton Ho 160 Milton Cresc Leicester did in fact leave a will
Probate Oxford 27 June ref 8480903230U - not exceeding £40,000
This is from the Gov.uk website Find a will but unfortunately no other details given.
At least its something to follow up.
Good luck.
-
Thanks. As a family they were pretty good at leaving Wills. They will be my backstop.
Can anyone see Claude anywhere though? That is the question.
-
Claude features on the Hamburg passenger list for 1925. What I don't really understand, is that I thought the Hamburg passenger lists was for emigration from Europe, mostly to the US but I can't see any where that mentions that on the passenger list - instead in the column that says "coming from" it says Leicester, and in the column that states "destination" it also says Leicester. :-\ I would be interested if anyone who is more familiar with these lists could explain them!
-
His mother was German, so he may have been going to see family.
I suppose this suggests I might not find him in Germany permanently.
-
Info about the ship he was on http://www.harwichanddovercourt.co.uk/harwich-ships/london-north-eastern-railway/ so yes - perhaps he was visiting relatives in Germany.
-
Wish we had a"like" button.
Thanks.
-
I put polizist into translate, occupation poilceman I think 1925.
-
At 15 he was a little too young to be a Policeman... I think you will find that applies to the person next to him on the list. Easily done.
According to the passenger list, his DOB is 21 June 1910. I'm now using that to search and will see what comes up.
-
I know! they have the other chap transcribed as Robert Tickle and did have a bit of a look and tried policeman but found nothing else for him.
-
If you are going to go for a Will, then maybe Elsie Dorothee Louise in 1977 might be the best to try. A mother is fairly likely to name all her surviving children .
-
Good point! I think I'll order that one.
I've had no luck with marriage or death indexes or the 1939 Register. It's all a bit of a mystery.
-
I've now had the results back of a search of the electoral roll for the family home at 23 Bodnant Avenue. Claude was on the roll in 1932, but not thereafter.
I've double checked the deaths again, but there's nothing.
I wonder whether he got to the age of 21 and then ran away from home or something?
-
Replies 18 and 19 refer. His mothers will is your best bet at the moment. Presume you haven't found him on the 1939 register?
-
Well, I couldn't find him on the 1939 Register so in the end I sent for his mother's Will. Although she did not die until 1977, the Will was made in 1966, and it's clear from its contents that at that point, Claude William was still alive, as his mother left him £500 and a share of her household effects. His siblings were better provided for.
Sadly, whoever drafted the Will did not see fit to include addresses, so I still have no idea where on the planet Clause was.
I'm now trying to locate his nieces, who are named in the Will, without much success.
-
At least you know now that he was still alive in 1966.
Have we established all his siblings yet? When and where sis they die? And do we know their children?
Any grandchildren (children of Claude) mentioned in the Will?
-
His siblings (all deceased for the record) were Phyllis Dorothy (1908-1984), Dennis Edwin (1914-1974) and Joan Sabina (1918-1983).
The two granddaughters mentioned in the Will are Dennis and Margery's daughter born in Southampton in 1947 and Joan and Ronald's daughter born in Leicester in 1957. I'm struggling to follow them through.
I had thought that Joan had had two children from her first marriage, but there is no mention of either in the Will.
It would have been really helpful if the solicitor who drafted the Will had included addresses!
-
Do you have an actual date of birth for Claude?
-
I don't have his birth certificate, but on the passenger list he said 21 June 1910, which pretty much tallies with the registration of his birth in the September Quarter of 1910.
I've searched against that date in the death index without success.

I think the GF thread is pretty much dead now and it's covered some different ground anyway.
Claude is still morecof a mystery than I had ever expected.

Hey everyone! I’m wondering if anyone from this discussion is still active. You are correct, my grandfather, Claude Bradbury, emigrated to South Africa after a dispute with his brother—apparently over inheritance, if what he told my dad was accurate. My dad, Peter John Bradbury, was born and raised in South Africa, as was I.
I’d love to learn more about this side of my family’s history! I’ve been searching but haven’t found much, and since I never got the chance to meet my grandfather, any information would mean the world to me. If anyone can share anything, I’d really appreciate it!
All my dad can say about my grandfather Claude is: "My father never spoke about his family to any of us here in South Africa. We did not even know his real name was Claude. Everyone here in South Africa called him Jim or James including my mother" - might explain why you were struggling to find him lol!

Hi Santana
I had a chat with your Dad this morning who informed me you were doing some research, so glad to hear it, by the looks of things this chat went quiet in 2017 however I did have a look at anstynomads profile and saw he was last active on Sunday. I believe you can PM message him in Roots Chat after you have made three posts, so I think just make two more posts and you should be good to go, please keep me in the loop if you do as any info on Grandad(Fish) is always exciting.
Regards Cuzzy C

I presume you have been communicating with Peter and Santana and that we are also cousins?
-
I have had some exchanges of e mails with Santana. Waiting for her to get back to me.
As you and Santana are the sane generation, we share the same relationship.
-
Well pleased to meet you Cuzy, allthough Santana and I are not quit the same generation, I was born in 1968 as my user name implies and my cousin Santana in the late 1990s or early 2000s. My daughter Taleah and Santana were born around the same time and Leah will be turning 24 in April.
