Title: Trade directories
Post by: Hilary F on Sunday 20 November 16 16:47 GMT (UK)
Hi
Just wondering about an abbreviation I found in a trade directory.  It gives the name of the company and then in brackets, w.ch  It was a boot and shoe manufacturers.  Can anyone shine any light on what it might mean please?

Which trade directory are we talking about - where is the company situated?  Was it (W.Ch), (w.ch) or ?

It was Wrights, Leicester, 1887-88, page 268 of the contents list - link here if you want it :) http://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/cdm/compoundobject/collection/p16445coll4/id/278599/rec/18
It is under the listings for boot manufacturers and reads:
Hunt & Tebbet (w.ch), 7 Lower Free Lane.
