Hi, wonder if anyone can help.
I have an Ancestor Jane E Chipchase, born c1859. (possibly Jane Elizabeth Hodgson/Hodgeson)
Found her on 1881,1891 & 1901 census shown born in Cumberland.
However place of birth is given three ways, search of the web has not proved fruitful.
Possibly phonetically incorrect, possibly very local, any help as to location, gratefully received.
1) slaskat, Cumberland
2) Erscal Mell, Cumberland
3) Iskile Mill, Cumberland
Many thanks - Mark

This is her baptism - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:J3XJ-3W5
She is on the 1871 census at Friars Hall, High Sebergham, Wigton, with Robert and Eliza, but the birth place is also unclear.

There are several mills in the area but I can't find a match.

David,
What can i say, many many thanks, the Census also has a Bishop Auckland link which i have.
Most grateful, i'm sure the Mill name could be local but gone. Regards - Mark

This looks like them in 1861 RG9/3931 f7 p7
Caldbeck Hatcliff -
Address Hesket New Market
Robert Hodgson 28 Bn Sebergham occ Corn Miller
Elizabeth Hodgson 30 Bn Shilton, Leicestershire
Thomas Hodgson 6 bn Durham
Mary Ellen Hodgson 4 bn Sebergham
Jane E Hodgson 1 bn Sebergham
John Nicholson 71 Lodger bn Sebergham
That last snippett posted by David could be Heskett at a stretch ;D

I think the 1881 birthplace is Heskat.
Which would fit with what Rosie suggested, i.e. birthplace Hesket Newmarket.
-
Rosie,
Thank you for that, like you found the 1861, very happy these are the right gals and guys, finding the mill would be the bonus!
Slasket could be Hesket?
IsaKill could be Hazelgill?
as we do, just thinking out loud to myself!
Many thanks - Mark
-
Thank you Jen, I concur, I think it's in and around there somewhere, Regards Mark
-
Slasket could be Hesket?
What I meant was that what you had read as an 'S' on the 1881 census could actually be a badly written 'H'.
-
Hi Jen, many thanks, thats how i understood you, much appreciated. i think the messages went out of order. Regards Mark

According to the new GRO index, the childrens' mother was Eliza Young.
HODGSON, JANE ELIZABETH mmn YOUNG
GRO Reference: 1859 S Quarter in WIGTON Volume 10B Page 443
I assume that this is her baptism - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:JW8X-2X6
This is probably her in 1841 - Earl Shilton and Hinckley are close to each other:-

Aha!!
In 1861 Enumeration District page for High Sebergham there is a Hives Gill Mill. But on the actual census its called Ives Gill Corn Mill.
Immediately before it are Church Town and Brow Top. So it has to be in this area

Does Ives Gill = Iveskill?

There is also a reference in the Carlisle Journal 30 January 1857:-
To let... WATER CORN MILL, with the Drying Kiln and other conveniences attached, called IVESKILL MILL, in the parish of Sebergham, in the County of Cumberland, now in the occupation of Mr. ISAAC HETHERINGTON.
...Mr. WILLIAM BECTON, of Sowerby Row, the owner.
Sowerby Row, 29th Jan. 1857.

With the benefit of hindsight the location in the snip David posted in reply #1 clearly says Iveskill.
If the location I suggested at Sebergham is correct, then this is the old mill http://www.rootschat.com/links/01iuw/
If you go onto google earth you can see the profile of the mill race running along the track which comes up from the south.
Edit No this is wrong, see next reply ::)

Scrap that, totally wrong ::)
The 1861 and 1871 Enumeration pages show that 'Hives Gill Mill' was on the east side of the River Caldew, so it can't be the one I mentioned earlier which is on the west side :-[ :-X
In the same area in 1871 is Newlands, and lo and behold on the 1861 map just north of Newlands is Ivescale Mill (Corn). http://maps.nls.uk/view/102340803#zoom=6&lat=3826&lon=4024&layers=BT
Here it is on a side by side map http://maps.nls.uk/view/102340803#zoom=6&lat=3826&lon=4024&layers=BT
It's marked as 'empty' in 1881.
The OS maps indicate there is still some sort of building there.

From the Carlisle Journal 31 July 1857:-
WANTED immediately, a MILLER, accustomed to Country Work. - Apply to Mr. ROBERT HODGSON, Ivescale Hill (sic), near Hesket-New-Market.
There are also notices for the sale of Ivescale Mill in 1863 and to be let in 1870.
