I am trying to write up a history of my Alderdice Family.
Alexander ALDERDICE was the son of James Alderdice, a butcher, and was born we think October 1797. He married Jane McCLURE daughter of James McClure and Martha McCarty who was about 1800 in Lisburn
Alexander and Jane settled initially in Lisburn where their first child James was born in 1822.
I am looking for information on this couple or more particularly information and photos about what life was like in Lisburn at that time.
-
A b it early for photos but if you google 'old photographs Lisburn' you might find some Victorian ones showing old buildings.
-
two sources you may know

I know its a bit later on, but the parish of derriaghy has a long history of the Alderdice surname. Might be worth a look.
This has something interesting about Alderdices http://lisburn.com/books/huguenots/huguenots_5.html (http://lisburn.com/books/huguenots/huguenots_5.html)
And also you could try this:
http://newspapers.library.wales/home (http://newspapers.library.wales/home)
I know, a welsh website. But its free and they actually have A LOT of articles about lisburn. Might be worth a shot.

Hi Belle4

the originator Cawara hasn’t been posting for a year I think. She’s been researching FH for over 15 years. Her tree started without any sources given
James Alderdice a butcher b~Oct ? 1797
children
Alexander Alderdice m Jane McClure b~1800 in Lisburn dau James McClure &Martha McCarty who was about 1800 in Lisburn. Alexander and Jane settled initially in Lisburn children
James Alderdice b1822 Lisburn.
note my problem is Lisburn. it is in two areas of the civil parish of Blaris,
the only directory found
Bradshaw's General And Commercial Directory 1819 PRONI copy
Alderdice is not listed under Lisburn, however McCarty and McClure are
it has one reference to Alderdice under the Belfast section trades and professions
under Butchers is James Alderdice 55 Hercules Street nowdays Royal Avenue That James is still there in 1831, repeated in 1835 and joined by Charles William Alderdice a tanner, Lisburn listed under Belfast neighbourhood. By1842 james is joined in Belfast by David a publican in little Donegal st, and a William who lives in Wesley place
here are no Alderdice in directories 1805,1806,1807, 1808 see www.lennonwylie.co.uk/
looking for Derryaghy at www.niplacenames and www.logainm.ie/en/ the latter lists the townlands listed in English and Irish. The civil parish name was spelt Derryaghy in an 1851 census. On looking up the 1851 census the surviving extract is for:-
Alderdice Thomas Tamnyvane 18 Upper Massereene Aghagallon Antrim 74 Male - Head Of Family Married 1792 Linnen Weaver Can Read Antrim - -
Alderdice Ellen Tamnyvane 18 Upper Massereene Aghagallon Antrim 76 Female - Wife Married 1792 None Can Read Antrim - -
Alderdice Hanah Tamnyvane 18 Upper Massereene Aghagallon Antrim 53 Female - Daughter Not Married -
Aghagallon is located at bottom westerly.its northeast boundary is shared Glenavy parish then Ballinderryabout 10/15 miles west of Derryaghy
Hi stalightr
I explored your ancestor
Edward Alderdice 1797 Derriaghty Lisburn and found this pocket of Alderdice all of full age living in Derryaghy civil parish in 1827 in the Tithe Applotment Books 1823-1837 source I added two one Blaris ie Lisburn, and Lambeg because irts a neighbor parish
http://www.irishgenealogyhub.com/antrim, the Hub is a most useful listing of the names in the civil parish giving the townland names. taken from the originals
Alderdice, Chas. Townland: Town of Lisburn Year: 1834 Blaris Antrim
Alderdice, James Townland: Lambeg Year: 1827 Derryaghy Antrim
Alderdice, William Townland: Near Lambeg Year: 1827 Derryaghy Antrim
Alderdice, Edward Townland: Milltown Year: 1827 Derryaghy Antrim
Alderdice, Edwd. Townland: Milltown Year: 1827 Derryaghy Antrim
Alderdice, Murry Townland: Milltown Year: 1827 Derryaghy Antrim
Alderdice, Mathew Townland: Moss Side Year: 1827 Derryaghy Antrim
Alderdice, Jas. Townland: Lambeg Year: 1828 Lambeg Down
to find out more the original books are in the PRONI Belfast.
Within the same townland the original book sometimes uses Sr senior and Jr Junior or perhaps Edward may have owned two plots of taxrable land or blgs or both, and the enumerator has listed the 2nd plot with his name as Edwd, or they are 2 people. the impotant part is their likely close relatives are James, Matthew, Murry(Murray), and William . the same source has
The originals are not useful for building family history trees as such but help locate other possible sources if they exist. research work is being done on these originals to make them more available. The originals look like this example you will finder an Alxr Alder no relation just picked at random, on the page and that’s is a normal entry http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004239503/004239503_00313.pdf rarely this is accompanied by a map.
