Title: New people appearing on my Ancestry.co.uk tree without my permission ?!
Post by: kob3203 on Friday 11 November 16 13:58 GMT (UK)
My tree's public, but not shared with anybody, so only I should be able to edit it.

Today I noticed that the spouses of my grandmother's siblings, plus all her nephews and nieces, have been added to it. (I specifically did NOT include these people in my tree, as I am using it for direct ancestors and their siblings only).

Has anybody else had something similar happen ?

Does anybody know what might be going on ?

Not sure how it works when adding people but have you possibly added someone from the site (rather than inputting manually) which in turn has brought all their descendants in tow  ???

Has some one else got access to your password and user name ...as I don't think you can add anything without it ....I might be wrong

If your tree is public - Other users can view all content in your tree except information about living people and notes. Other users can also see your username or full name depending on your account settings. No one should be able to access your tree unless you invite them and they have a password.

Rosinish: I made a mistake early today while adding a census record (for another family in a different branch), and that added a whole bunch of duplicate people who I had to manually delete. But I can't imagine any single record that would include all the spouses of my grandmother's siblings, plus all her nephews and nieces. And I'm fairly sure that I haven't added any records/people for this branch of the family recently.

rosie17: Nobody else has access to my username/password.

Sandra: That's what I thought, which is why I'm perplexed.

Oddly enough, today I clicked on one person I've not looked at for a while - and looked at their suggested "links" - and it threw up quite a few suggestions for another person, with a totally different name, on a different line in the same tree. Perhaps there's some sort of glitch today?

Yes, I too thought that a few odd things were happening yesterday, even before I noticed these new people appearing (by the way, the new people are correct, more or less).

Regarding the particular conundrum of my mystery adder-of-people, I realized that although the tree wasn't shared with anybody there were three outstanding invitations to share my tree as a guest. So I cancelled them just in case. But I got an email late last night from a contact that seemed to indicate that one of those people, who turns out to be related to my contact and is actively researching the family in question at Ancestry, did actually receive my invitation. So perhaps the invitation was accepted and perhaps he added the new people?

Except that:

a) Ancestry didn't inform me, either via a 'Your invitation has been accepted' email or via the Tree Settings / Sharing option in my Ancestry account, that the invitation had been accepted.

b) he was invited as a guest, and guests can only view the tree, not modify it. I've just confirmed that for myself.

I'm currently awaiting a response from my contact to confirm whether or not the invitation was accepted, and whether or not the invitee actually made changes.

You can choose roles to control what you will allow your friends and family to work on in your tree. Each person with whom you want to share your tree will have a drop down menu next to their name.
Choose “Editor” if you want to give your cousin full access to add and edit people in your tree.
Choose “Contributor” if you want your cousin to add photos but not change any facts in your tree.
Choose “Guest” if you don’t want your cousin to have any rights except to see your tree.

Thanks Sandra. I'm still waiting to see if it was my contact who made the changes.

If so then the most likely explanation is that I accidentally invited him as 'Editor', Ancestry's notification to me that he'd accepted somebody got lost, and he simply added the people who were obviously missing.

Even though I'm 99% certain that he was invited as a 'Guest' (along with two other people). I double-checked a few times to see whether anybody had accepted, but none had, and I'm almost certain that the invited roles were all 'guest', and that 'see living people was UNchecked. I was working on the basis that I can easily increase the role to contributor/editor, and/or tick that box at a later date.

I've just created an Ancestry Support account and asked over there too.

When you add a record from Ancestry e.g. a census record, have you ticked other people rather than just say the head of the house? If you do that, it automatically adds all of those to your tree.

Otherwise, as others have said, no one can add to your tree unless you've invited them as an editor.

I'm 99% certain that nobody else has ever been invited to share my tree until about a week ago.
I'm 99% certain that the three people I invited about a week ago were invited as guests.
I'm 99% certain that none of them had accepted my invitation before I cancelled them.
I'm 99% certain that nobody else has access to my account.
I'm 99% certain that I haven't ever added any records to my tree that would automatically have added these people.

Conclusion: Maybe I added them myself ages ago and totally forgot.

I'm 99% certain that I didn't add them myself.

But if I'm wrong on one of these six 99%s (and I think I must be, excepting a major glitch at Ancestry) then I think this is the most likely one.

So.

Is there any way to tell when a person was added to the tree ? I think just the sequence in which they were added would be enough.

I've never ever invited anyone to view or join my tree. When people have contacted me with specific enquiries, I have responded by typing out the information they want, but not giving any access to my tree.

My tree's been public from day one, around 2008, but I hadn't invited anybody to share my tree till last week.

There were two main reasons for inviting people to share last week:

1) Being a non-paying member I can't contact other members. However, when I received a bunch of photo hints which were clearly identifiable as my great uncles and aunts I discovered that I could contact the user by inviting them to share my tree.

2) My sister doesn't have an Ancestry account but wants to see my tree, and I noticed that Ancestry don't offer free accounts on their main page any more. But by sending a non-member an invitation to share your tree they are able to create a free account.

And I'm now fairly sure that the mystery adder-of-people was myself, eight years ago! I noticed that two of the 'new' in-laws had profile images. Profile images that I'd cropped and uploaded in 2008.

Do I feel stupid ?   :)

Thanks for the tip. I'd been wanting to contact an Ancestry member but didn't realise it could be done without a subscription.

I have three relatives who can see my full tree including living relatives.  I NEVER give permission for them to edit the tree.  Much safer to ask them to message you if they notice an obvious discrepancy so you can check it out and, if necessary, alter the details yourself.  If you have been working on your tree for years and someone mucks it up unintentionally it can cause you a lot of heartache and time putting it right.  Hope you find out what happened.  :'(

I'm now almost certain that I added them myself eight years ago, and simply forget. I'm trying to track down an old GED export that would confirm 100% that theory.

No need to feel stupid, we all make mistooks  ::)

At least you have had the decency to let contributors know with the truth which in itself says a lot about you as a person.

Glad your dilemma is now fixed, even 'tho' it wasn't broken  ;D  ;D

Thanks Annie.

And I now have 100% confirmation that I did it myself years ago - all these 'new' people are present in a GED backup from 2010
