Hello, I was wondering, can anybody help me with this ..
I am looking for information (parents, wedding ) etc on a William Barnes .. he was born in Cranbrook and married to an Ann, his son James was born 1807 in Hawkhurst.
James married Amelia Pemble in 1829 ... I would also be very happy about information on Amelia :)
Thank you so much!!!

According to the Mid Kent Marriage Index there was a marriage at Cranbrook as follows,
1800 Oct 23 William Barns to Ann Apps
A possibility. ???
I cannot find a baptism for James at Hawkhurst but there is one at Cranbrook,
1808 Feb 2 James s/o William and Ann Barnes
However, there appears to be 3 siblings baptised on the same occasion,
Frances aged 15,
Ann aged 11 and
Mary aged 8.
A muddying of the waters.
Tony ???

Hello, thank you very much for your help Tony.
Does it have a maiden name for James mother?
Would her maiden name be found in James and Amelia s wedding entry?
If Ann Apps was correct, it would mean the first two children you mentioned were born before her marriage.

I am afraid the answer to both your questions is no!
It was in (and after) 1837 that (only) the father's name was entered on a Marriage Certificate. Civil Registration.
At the same time (it was introduced that) a mother's maiden name be recorded on a Birth Certificate. Civil Registration.
The only clues that may be found, on an earlier Marriage Record, are the names of the witnesses. Mind you this is very rarely the case.
Yes those ages make the whole scenario a bit messy. Plus there appears to be a further 4 legitimate siblings to James, as under. Botheration! ??? :'( ???
1801 Dec 25 Rob BARNES s/o William & Ann
1805 Mar 24 My Ann BARNES d/o William & Ann
1810 Jan 14 Sam BARNES s/o William & Ann
1812 Mar 1 Sarah BARNES s/o William & Ann
An apologetic,
Tony
