I have decided to pursue my mother’s English and Welsh genealogy for a while since I have traced my father’s genealogy back to the point where I find myself in the realm of speculation.
I need some help getting started on the other side of the great pond (Atlantic Ocean) as I live in Texas. ;D
I do not have very much information to start with other than what follows. :(
According to my mother, my great-grandfather was Joseph Thomas HARROTT. According to United States census records Joseph HARROTT (no middle name provided in census record) was born about 1836 in England. Also according to US census records, his father was Thomas HARROTT, occupation miner, born about 1809 in England, and his mother was Maria born about 1808 in England. They immigrated to the US sometime before 1862 when Joseph Thomas HARROTT and his wife Anna had their first child in the US.
Family legend has it that Joseph Thomas(?) HARROTT was born in Liverpool perhaps in August of 1836. I hesitate to mention this as I cannot confirm the information, and it may turn out to be nothing but family myth.
Thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Hi there and Welcome to Rootschat
Found this on the IGI,which seems to fit in with the info you gave plus the 1880 US census there too, which has him in Texas with Anna and lots of kids ;D
Looked at the 1861 but he (nor dad) are there but the surname is not too common, coming mostly from Ashton Under Lyne in Lancs.
Maybe a request on the Lancashire board for an 1851 look up would be a good idea.
JOSEPH HARROTT
Christening: 20 NOV 1836 Saint Michael, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England
Parents:
Father: THOMAS HARROT Mother: SARAH
Happy hunting

I need a little help that may seem very basic to those of you in the UK.
OK, in the United States we have states such as Texas, Counties within the State such as Dallas County, and cities within the County such as Dallas or Mesquite. When I researched my family in Germany it was very similar with States such as Brandenburg and Regions (counties) such as the Uckermark, and cities.
I am a little confused with the UK systems. Like this example:
Saint Michael, Ashton Under Lyne, Lancashire, England
England is the country, but what is the city, region, state, and so on?

Hi again
The county is Lancashire. The town is Ashton Under Lyne and the district ie parish, is St Michael which I think would be the actual name of the churcu where he was baptised. Also giving it's name to an area of the town.
See http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/index.html for more clues.
Lancashire is 'up north',on the west coast and is indeed the county that Liverpool is in.
If your research ever covers the London area at all,you will find that under the county of London, or Middlesex......and if it is south of the river Thames sometimes Surrey or to the east it could be Kent.I think most of your questions will be answered by looking at the Genuki site.
Good luck
