Title: Free Military Records This Week.
Post by: relatedtoturnips on Wednesday 09 November 16 11:48 GMT (UK)

Just to let folks know, Findmypast & Ancestry are offering free records this week.

http://www.findmypast.co.uk/

"This Remembrance Day, Findmypast wants to give everyone the chance to uncover the heroes in their family tree.

And so from November 10th to the 13th, you can explore Findmypast's entire collection of over 70 million military records covering some of modern history's most significant conflicts free of charge."

http://www.ancestry.co.uk/

"Which of your family members served in WWI? To what regiments were they attached? Were they following in the footsteps of other military ancestors?

Answer these questions and any others you have about the soldiers in your family with three days of free access to all our UK military records starting this Friday."

Have fun!

Unfortunately, I have discovered that you have to physically be in the UK in order to access these free records.  I am in NZ and have been told this by Support on Facebook.

You should be able to access them if you log in to ancestry.co.uk

I'm in Australia and have access to the free records at the moment.  ;)

Hi maddys52,

Thank you for the hint.  I am logged into ancestry.co.uk and I am still hitting the paywall.  I had a chat with Support on Facebook and this is the answer I got:
" The free access has gone live as of this morning (UK time) however as it is a UK specific access period, only our members who are physically based in the UK can actually avail of it. Please keep an eye out on your emails to get updates regarding any offers we will be running in Oceania."

It seems they are being inconsistent about who they think is in "Oceania". Ancestry should make it clear who can and can't access the free records.

Oh that does seem very annoying and unfair to our friends across the Tasman.  >:( :(

FOLD3 is also in the free access arrangements.

Very useful as it is normally an extra even to Ancestry's worldwide subscribers.
