Trying to find a George Butcher who would have been living in Edinburgh area early 1920's. I think he was originally from west Scotland, possibly Glasgow. He worked in a dairy in Liberton/Gilmerton area of Edinburgh for a while in 1924. would have been born approx 1900.
Thanks Irene

What exactly are you looking for? Do you know who his parents were? You must know something more about him to have a reason to look for him.
Scotland's People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk lists a George Butcher born in South Leith in 1900, who looks a likely candidate. There's no matching death, however, so it looks as if he did not die in Scotland. There's also no obvious marriage in Scotland.

I only have the information given and a photo of him which was given to me 10 years ago by a dying relative. Not a lot to go on i am afraid.

No, but do you think he is in your family tree? Did the relative tell you he was related in some way? Have you researched the relative? If there was a connection you could work back through both people's ancestors until you find the match.

This is the only entry I can see in 1901:
Matthew D Butcher 30 Liusad (as transcribed) Oil & Cake Miller b, England
Sophie G Butcher 25 b. Coatbridge, Lanarkshire
George G Butcher 1 b. Glasgow
Address: 7 Albert St, Glasgow Maryhill/Milton
Hopefully the birth entry mentioned by Forfarian will help to confirm details for you further.

The one I mentioned was born in South Leith, but there is one born in Maryhill in 1899 who would match the one in the 1901 census.

The George Butcher born Leith died (in England I believe) as he was included on the next census (as were 2 other siblings) which have been crossed out with 'died' added.
There was only one other possibility on 1901 census:
George G. Butcher aged 1 born Maryhill, Glasgow, son of Matthew and Sophie.
Birth listings show this to be a George Gray Butcher b.1899 Maryhill. However, can find nothing more about a George G. (or Gray) Butcher in marriages or deaths so quite possible that he didn't use his middle name.
1901 census on Ancestry plus his birth entry on SP show his surname as Butcher - however, looking at original birth certificate the surname is actually Burtcher and family appear to be living in Kelvin, Glasgow on the next census. SP shows a George Burtcher married Elizabeth Brannan 1919 Kelvin.
So, on the grounds that there is no George Butcher born ca. 1900 Scotland besides the one born Leith who was dead by 1911, and the George Burtcher b.1899 Glasgow, could the latter be 'your man' I wonder.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I know George is a definate relative. I suppose i am hoping someone out there will read this and think my George could be their George! Maybe find out a little more when the 1921 census is released! Long time to wait though. Lesson learned by all this is that i should have , sensitively, asked a lot more questions before it was too late. It was hard enough getting what little i have! An extended family is out there somewhere. Annette i am thinking you might have something with the Burtcher guy and i will dig deeper with that. Just because he was married in 1919 doesnt mean he is not my man. Thanks all.

Hmmm.
Matthew Draper Burtcher married Sophie Gerald Stewart in Glasgow in 1898.
Matthew Draper Burtcher was born in 1871 and his birth was registered in Houghton in the March quarter.
In 1881 he's with his parents in Houghton-le-Spring: Head George Grey Burtcher, 47, coal miner; wife Isabella, 46; son George Grey, 12, coal miner; son Matthew, 10; mother-in-law Isabella Draper, 88; all born in County Durham. In 1871 the surname is spelled Butcher.
George Gray Burtcher and Isabella Draper were married in Houghton-le-Spring in 1854.
Sophia Gerald Stewart was born in Old Monkland in 1875. In 1881 she is with her family in New Monkland: Head Donald, 53, Superintendent of County Police, born Lybster; wife Elspeth, 46, born Kirriemuir; children Daniel, 17; Nellie, 15; James, 13; Elsie Ann, 11; Eliza, 9; Peter, 7; Sophie, 5; and Clara, 1; and grandchildren Isabella Young, 4; Robertson Young, 2; and Euphemia Young, 1.
The IGI shows them as the children of Daniel or Donald Stewart and Elspeth Baxter. The IGi doesn't list a marriage of either Donald or Daniel Stewart to Elspeth Baxter, but there is one of David Stewart to E Baxter in Longforgan in 1858. The birth certificates of the children will tell you the date and place of their parents' marriage and hence whether David is indeed Daniel/Donald. (It's quite common for Daniel and Donald to be used interchangeably. Not so common for David to be used for Daniel/Donald, but this could be the second instance I've come across recently.)
It will also tell you the full names of both sets of parents, which will get you back another generation. I think Daniel/Donald's parents may be John Stewart and Ann, and Elspeth's may be James Baxter and Isabella White, but I'm not confident about that.
So do you have Bu(r)tcher, Draper, Stewart, or Baxter any where in your own tree?
