Title: 1871 Census looks like Croyden Brook, Cheshire
Post by: LizFox on Thursday 03 November 16 06:44 GMT (UK)
Hi.  My family were living in Kirkleatham in Yorkshire in the 1871 Census and the wife was born in what looks like Croyden Brook, Cheshire.  I should be grateful if anyone can shed any light on the place name.  Is it unusual for her to end up living so far from her birth place?  The family she married into were Ironstone Miners in Yorkshire so could this have been the reason that she ended up in Yorkshire?  Sorry, the copy census won't upload.  Thanks all.

Hi LizFox

Can you give details of the person you are looking at so we can check the census image?

Thanks Kay

In Cheshire there are places called Preston Brook, Shipbrook, Utkinton & Cotebrook, and Witton cum Twambrooks.
As Kay says, for questions like this you should give the details so that the census entry can be looked at for an opinion.

I'm seeing contemporary newpaper references to  "Croyden Brook, in the Township of Tintwistle " and "Croyden-brook, in the Vale of Tintwistle". I am wondering if it is Crowden.

CROYDEN BROOK

Through the kind liberality of Messrs Brown, and others, of this place, who are anxious for the education and improvement of the working class, the Sunday school is at present being enlarged, and will ready for re-opening about Christmas.

And in the Glossop-dale Chronicle and North Derbyshire Reporter of 26 November 1859 that same article about the Sunday School was headed up:

Crowden Brook

That's not Kirkleatham, it's Eston, Guisborough. No wonder I couldn't find it from the information given!

In the 1881 census she's born Lazenby, Yorkshire; in 1891, born Middlesbro'; 1901 born Eston.

Hi all.  Just some feedback to let you know how I've got on.  I got some information back from Curious Fox and Crowden used to be in Cheshire but is now in Derbyshire.  I've found her parents now, in the 1851 census living in Crodden Brook, Tintwistle, Ashton-Under-Lyne, Lancashire.  Looking at the census, they travelled around a lot as a family living in Cheshire, Lancashire and Yorkshire.  Thanks all for all your wonderful help.

The 1871 Census says : Private House Old Eston - District of Guisborough, Kirkleatham, Yorkshire.  That's why I said Kirkleatham ShaunJ

Yes Eston was in the Kirkleatham subdistrict of Guisborough registration district, but it's a few miles away from the town of Kirkleatham.
