I have a mystery that i cannot solve, so any assistance would be welcome.
Enoch Goddard and his son Enoch Joseph Goddard both died on the same date 14th May 1834. This may have been the result of an accident, and i would like to know where i would search for the information of these deaths. They both lived in Nottingham at the time of death.
-
How old was his son when he died
No death certificates in 1834 so cause of death could be difficult to prove
-
Hi,
Enoch snr was 71 and Enoch jnr was 43. Are there any newspaper archive sites i could look at?
-
Can you give us more info about the Goddards, eg where did they live? Where did you find the information about their deaths?
There is a burial on the Notts FHS CD for Enock Goddard age 70, of Washington St, Notts StMary, buried on 16 Nov 1834. Obviously this would not fit with a death in the previous May! - so may not be the right person. I can't see any burial for Enoch jnr. in 1834 (or indeed at any other time). There's nothing in the online BL newspaper archive about either death but I can see a death notice for the wife of Enoch snr, Hannah, in 1847.
-
Hi all, there is a Tree on Ancestry that has those same day death dates, the birth.of Enoch Joseph ranges from 1778 to 1790, he apparently married a Charlotte Mayfield 5th September 1813
The Hannah Goddard above in 1841 is shown as Hannah GODDERD 74 with a John/Maria Spurr and family, John Spurr married Maria Goddard 29th August 1822 Nottingham, St Mary
Census ref HO107/870/ 3/7 / 7

Hi,
Thankyou all for your input. My research has come purely from Ancestry. I do believe that they are true farther and son. I guess that this mystery will never be solved if there is nothing in the newspaper archives. Im wondering if they were miners and fell victim to an accident at the pit.
-
Hi OK pixipic, who did your Enoch Joseph marry ( if at all)?

PS Tree suggests he was a Frame Work Knitter?

I wonder if the info on Enoch Joseph's death is correct. There's an Enoch Joseph who dies in March 1856 in Radford district, with a marriage in Radford - no Joseph included in the name - in 1838. On 1851 his birthplace is noted as St Mary's, Nottingham, c1817
-
Hi have I the correct Hannah in 1841 Census as who were the parents of Maria Spurr nee Goddard b c 1802 St Mary?

Lots of Enochs!

Enoch Goddard 22 Jan 1789 Wesleyan,Nottingham,Nottingham,England parents Enoch,
Sarah (from Ancestry) (1784 05 24 Enoch GODDARD married Sarah SMITH at NOTTINGHAM St Mary)
Enoch Goddard b 11 May 1816 bapt 7 Jun 1816 Parliament St Formerly Hockley Chapel-Methodist Nottingham,England parents Enoch, Charlotte
-
Apologies - Enoch b 1817 is on later censuses and dies in 1888. The death could be his son, who is listed as Joseph on one census, but there's an Enoch Joseph birth registered 1839
-
I can't see Maria Goddard's baptism on the FH CD --- nor on ancestry
-
Enoch Goddard m Selina Astill in 1838 and according to the newspapers, both parties were from Radford. I think therefore that any Goddard events in Radford can probably be discounted.
However I would like to know where the original Ancestry treemaker got their details for deaths of the two Enochs because I'm yet to be convinced!!
-
More info about one of these couples - Enoch and Sarah buried a child in Basford (village) in 1794 and baptised another one there in 1795, maybe they moved out of the town centre.
-
Trying to tie some ends together:
Hannah Goddard died in Newcastle St in 1847; in her obit in the newspaper it said that she was the widow of Enoch, she was 80 years old and also that she had been a member of the Wesleyan church for more than 60 years. This suggests a yob around 1767 for her and would tie with the marriage in 1788.
In 1841 she was in Nottingham St with John Spurr and Maria nee Goddard. Can't atm find Maria's baptism (we could do with some non-con resources for this family!)
In 1851 John and Maria were still in Nottingham St and with them, John's 61 yr old sister in law, Frances Stone. I can't see any marriages of a male Stone to Frances - but Frances's age would fit with the baptism of Frances Goddard, d of Enoch and Hannah.
However as yet we have no resourced evidence of the deaths in May 1834, and we don't know which of the baptised Enochs survived to adulthood.
-
Hi still looking for clues via Frances Stone from 1851 census, presume same one who died March qtr 1853 Nottingham 7b 149?
1841?

Frances Goddard
Joseph Stones
Marriage Date: 17 Feb 1806 Nottingham St Mary
[Edit: but note two other Frances Goddard marriages in the same parish in 1817 and 1820. No fathers listed for any]
-
Frances and Joseph Stone had a son in 1814 called Enoch
1812 08 14 Enoch father Joseph STONE mother Frances NOTTINGHAM St Mary
In 1841, Frances is boarding in Radford; no sign of her husband, but there was a death for Jospeh Stone age 51 in the workhouse in Notts St Mary in 1831, so this could have been him.
There was also a marriage for Enoch Stone in 1833 in Radford.
But none of this answers the questions about which Enoch belonged to which Goddard family and when they died!!
-
:) And also so far no baptism of an Enoch Joseph Goddard?
Keyboard86
-
Nope. But he could have taken on the name Joseph "unofficially" after being baptised.
My suggestions based on FHS CD and suggestions above, and all following in Nots St Mary:
Enoch G and Rachel were having children in the 1720-30 and this included Enoch(2) b 1729 and John 1736.
Enoch (2) m Mary Pemberton in 1759; their children included Enoch (3) (b1762).
John m Sarah Lacey in 1756; their children included Enoch (4) (b 1763); they also had a son John who himself had a son Enoch b 1785 and died 1792 (5)
I can't separate Enoch 3 and 4, and either Enoch 3 or 4 could have been the one who died in 1834 aged 70.
One of them married Sarah Smith in 1784 -- no mention of any Enochs born to them. Sarah died in 1800 and I suspect the same Enoch m Mary Hough 6/12 later - no children.
The other married Hannah Coates in 1788 and their children included Enoch b 1790 (6). Enoch 6 m Charlotte Mayfield in 1813; their children included Enoch b 1816 (7).
Burials include 1802 and 1807, neither named as "child of" so we can presume they were adult.
So - Enoch 2 (b 1729) could have been one of these maybe 1802.
Enoch 3 OR Enoch 4 died age 70 (ish) in 1834. The other died in 1807 (as Enoch and Hannah had children bapt up to 1805).
Enoch 5 b 1785 and d 1798
Enoch 6 b1790 - we haven't found a death
Enoch 7 could be the Radford Enoch as we know now there was a Radford link with the Stone family - died in the 1880s.
(One more Enoch was b 1788ish and died 1790 (?first child of Enoch and Hannah).
So though I can't separate them all out exactly, that would account for all burials and only leave Enoch b 1790 unaccounted for. And he's the one that allegedly died on the same day as either Enoch 3 or 4 - his father or uncle (although the date of burial for the older Enoch is not the same on the CD as given on the tree that started all this!!)
Phew, I think I've done my bit, off to do the washing up now!!
-
;D ;D You deserve it ( Not the washing up though)

PS HI pixipick, how are these two Enoch's related to you?
-
Pixipick
Have you contacted the tree owner to find which records the double death info came from?
-
We really should have looked at the simple stuff first >:(
Births Sep 1839 (>99%)
Goddard Enoch Joseph Radford 15 598
Deaths Mar 1856 (>99%)
GODDARD Enoch Joseph Radford 7b 99
and there he is in radford with his parents in Enoch and Selina in 1841 (that would be Enoch 7, his father, who m Selina Astill). In 1851 he's still with the family but enumerated as Joseph.
Oh, and there's a Charlotte Goddard of an appropriate age to be the wife/widow of Enoch 6 - on her own with two children in 1841, widowed (and in Radford) in 1851 and 61, died 1866.
-
Blimey, so many Enoch Goddards in my family. You have probably been looking at my tree on Ancestry Goddard/Pickard. Enoch Joseph Goddard was my 3rd great grandfather and Enoch Goddard my 4th. Im going to go over the data again and try and tie up all the information you good people have given me.
thank you :)
