Title: Greenbrae. Dumfries.
Post by: duckman on Thursday 27 October 16 22:12 BST (UK)
Just found out from Old British Newspapers that in 1918 my grandfather lived at Douglas Cottage, Greenbrae, Dumfries. Anyone know if its still there.
Have tried google streetmaps and old maps.

Hi Duckman

Probably good to figure out what road it was on in the Greenbrae area. At least you can then check street view etc and get a feel on the age of the property you can see.

From at least 1915 to 1930 VRs, there looks to be a NICOL family showing at: HOUSE DOUGLAS COTTAGE 107 LOCKERBIE ROAD TANNOCK PLACE.

1915 also shows Mrs ELIZABETH RAE, Proprietor Occupier - HOUSE DOUGLAS COTTAGE GREENBRAE

A William Rae shows with a will reference at that address: Railway Guard, Douglas Cottage, Greenbrae, Dumfries, d. 25/06/1905 at Dumfries, testate. This is from an entry on SP in 1914.

Can't see Mrs Elizabeth Rae at that address in later years (post 1915). Maybe looking at the original VR with additonal addresses would help with its location?

Hi, his elder Step sister was married to Andrew Nicol and she died in 1962 at 107 Lockerbie Rd. Also his younger sister and brother are connected to 107, so it looks like she took in the family after his mother died in Feb 1914. Did not realise the area was Greenbrae. Looked at google maps, seems to be a car park now.

Still puzzles me he always claimed he lived in Maxwelltown not Dumfries, but every address Ive found is in Dumfries.

Many Thanks for your help.

I seem to recall "Greenbrae" is on Lockerbie Road. The next time I am in the area, I'll look and see if there was a Douglas Cottage and, if it still exits. The name does sound familiar.

The 107 Locckerbie Road is an odd number and would be on the left side going out  the Lockerbie Road - the reason I mention this is, I lived at No 140 which was on the right hand side.

I see now where 107 Lockerbie Road was and, not where I had thought it was.

In regard to Douglas cottage Lockerbie Road Dumfries. My Great Grandparents William Rae and Elizabeth Jardine lived there. My Grandfather was born there in 1896. The cottage does still exist. It was sold when Elizabeth died.
