Does anyone know if a plan exists showing the burial plots of the churchyard of St Thomas a Beckett church in Chapel-En-Le-Frith, Derbyshire.
I'm looking for the burial plot where a little girl called Judith Barratt was buried in 1942. I'm doing this research on behalf of a friend (I'm an amateur genealogist). They paid for some research to be done at the DRO to confirm she was buried there as I live in Hants and can't do the leg work myself. The Derbyshire FHS have confirmed that there is no headstone.

How about writing to Chapel-en-le-Frith Parish Council and asking them if they can help you?
http://www.chapelpc.org/contact
If they can't I'm sure that they will point you in the right direction.

The following page at Rootsweb mentions memorial inscriptions, so the person doing look-ups might also have a plan: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~dusk/chapel-e-l-f.htm
If you follow the link there to "St Thomas P Reg" it looks as though the same person has a transcript available on CD - and this kind of publication often includes a plan.

I have the CDs -- and they do include a plan
Who are you looking for?
As I live in Chapel, if the grave can be identified, I could probably take a photo for you too -- although a lot of graves are very overgrown
-
Have you been over there recently Marmalady? The front part and that adjacent to the path leading to the lower area is reasonably accessible but most of the graveyard beyond that is more like something from a hammer horror film.
I thought the churchyard records had been destroyed a numb of years ago - are there (m)any Vernons on the CD?
-
There was a graveyard survey done in 1990 -- the CD contains these records -- so isn't a full list of everyone in there
I had a walk around the graveyard sometime over the summer -- and yes, a lot of it is pretty impassable --tho should be improving slightly now as the vegetation dies off for the winter.
But with luck, Danielle is looking for someone in the more accessible part!
Ray -- theres quite a lot of Vernons listed in the index -- are you wanting anyone in particular?

Hello Marmalady,
If you don't mind - are there any Atkiin/s on the index. ?
Thanks.

Marmalady - I understand now; it's from a survey rather than from the church's records which were allegedly destroyed.
We were in there a couple of months ago looking at the state of a grave we know. We meant to go back with the strimmer but it didn't happen. They did start a series of clearing parties but I'm not sure what happened to them.
As for the Vernons, there isn't anyone in particular - as yet. The Vernons in my tree are likely to grow quite considerably but they currently seem to be going in the direction of Wormhill and Peak Forest. Is the CD availabe anywhere?

Ray -- the CDs were compiled by Guy Martin / Martin Guy (can never remember which way round his name is!) who is something to do with the Parish Council - so maybe call in the Town Hall next time you're in Chapel. Or I can message you his email address.
The Index & graveyard plans are on one disc, the actual MIs on a second disc.
The CDs also include the survey of the Methodist Church taken around the same time -- but as I am Graveyard Steward for the Methodists I have more up-to-date info on that graveyard.
PC99 Theres about a dozen ATKINs in 4 or 5 graves -- any particular person you are looking for ?

Thanks - It's probably Martin Guy - the other one rides motorbikes and mends trucks! I've got to walk down to Morrisons this PM so I'll call in at the parish office (They're usually closed when I do. It is Wednesday and everything else seems to.)

Thanks everyone for your help. I'll try the parish council.
-
Danielle -- I can do a look up if you let me know who you are looking for

I'm looking for a little girl called Judith Barratt who died in 1942. There is no headstone. I don't have the burial record with me at the moment but I believe the plot number is 720. The family would like to know where in the churchyard she is buried.
-
Ahh, if there is no headstone, then my CDs cannot help -- they contain the MIs recorded in a graveyard survey done in 1990
I doubt the Parish Council will have any further info either -- you would need to try either Derbyshire Record Office to see if the burial books from that period have been deposited yet or the actual church if the books are still in use
ETA : Have just double-checked the CD -- although there's several Barratts in the Index, theres no Judith amongst them

You could try contacting the Church office:

Marmalady - thanks for your reply. I appreciate your help. The DRO didn't have any further info on this little girl except her baptism record which they sent me. I'll contact the parish office. However, I would be very interested to hVe the info you have on the other Barratts as I can check the family tree I've done so far to see if they are from this family. The family seemed to have stayed in the area for some time as I've gone back to 1827 so far.

Hello Marmalady,
I am interested in Aaron Atkin if you have him on the list. Thanks

Marmalady - a thought has just occurred to me. Does your CD of MIs include a grave (plot) number? If it does, perhaps I could work out (maybe roughly) where this little girl is buried from the closest headstone. Hope that makes sense.
-
No it doesn't, Danielle
When the volunteers did the graveyard survey, they assigned their own numbers to each headstone, ignoring any plots without any sort of stone or memorial. Consecutively numbered MIs could have any number of unmarked graves between them. They also divided the graveyard into several sections and started numbering at 1 in each section -- so you have A1, B1, C1 etc.
The numbers they assigned have no relation to any official plot number in the church books

Thanks for letting me know Marmalady. Worth a try ;)
