No timescale given by you re: birth/marriages/deaths
An Elizabeth Gotham Tarr married a William Lawson in Exeter in 1849 but that is too far back for them to be your grandparents
Gotham is an unusual middle name - are you sure John Alfred married an Elizabeth Gotham Tarr as I can't find any other match to a marriage

A John Alfred Lawson was born June qtr 1851 Melton Mowbray. I see from another post that you live in NZ. As I can't find John Alfred on any census - did they emigrate before 1861?

Sorry this has nothing to do with your query Chat a Lot, ut I was intrigued as John A was Widowed in 1881 and a Daug appears in 1891 Census age 6 where he is Widowed again.

Hi Carole yes you are right I am sorry I meant to write my grandfather John Alfred Lawson born 1851 and my great grand parents William Lawson and Elizabeth Gotham Tarr.
My grandfather John Alfred Lawson married my grandmother Gertrude Alice Abbott but he married her under the name Paul Fountain in 1910

Hi Trish yes that is what I am hoping will happen as I have just discovered who my real relatives are Lawson / Tarr / Gotham.
After searching the incorrect name (Fountain ) for years and getting nowhere I am hoping someone will have some photos etc they can share with me.

Hi Trish yes I found that about Henry G Lawson ( I assumed the G stands for Gotham) but Henry disappears after that and I can not find a birth cert for him but John Alfred Lawson seems to crop up from there on so I am wondering if he had a name change, MY grandfather John Alfred Lawson was born in Melton Mowbray not Birmingham. My great grandfather William Lawson was born in 1825 so in 1871 he would be 46 years old not 31 but he was a tailor.
Would you be able to tell me where you found the information in 1861 and also 1871 as I can't seem to find it. Is it from the census for those years? thanks Trish

Hi Carole Yes that is me but at that stage I didn't have the information I have now I was looking for the right person but the wrong name for years
I have given the correct information to Karenlee who was also looking for my grandfather.
A whole generation lived and died without knowing their correct surname which is sad.
As I kept hitting a brick wall re Paul Fountain I made sure that I would unearthed the truth for my children's sake.

If he married between 1871-1881 there is only one John Alfred Lawson marriage
March qtr 1876 Peterborough 3B 340 to either Caroline Simmons or Jane Smith McFarlane
That was his first marriage Carole he then married Rose Ellen Thorpe in 1883 in Kingston under John Alfred Lawson. Rose (Rosa) died in child birth their daughter was also named Rosa Ellen after her mother.
My grandfather then married a 3rd time to my grandmother Gertrude Alice but somewhere between 1901 and 1910 he changed his name from John Alfred Lawson to Paul fountain. he did write books and short stories under Paul Fountain.
Just to add to the confusion my great grandparents were William and Elizabeth nee Tarr Lawson and my great great grandparents were William and Elizabeth nee Jarmain Lawson

Hi, There is a William and Elizabeth in my famiky research. Tailors and coming to live in Melton (not born here). Two of their childen were named William and Susan. Susan was my gt. gt grandmother, marrying and raising her children in Melton and is buried here. Her brother William was also a tailor bht I brkeive moved away from the area. Possibly Devon if I have researched the right William.
