I want to find birth records for my great grandfather William Thomas Denis Thompson. He was born 1840-1842 in Co. Cork Ireland.
The only documented information I have is on William’s 1919 death certificate that states where born as “County Cork Ireland” and that he was aged 79 when he died. This puts his year of birth at 1840.
However on his son’s 1877 birth certificate it states that William was 35 years old. This puts his year of birth at 1842.
William was a gold miner and moved around a lot.
1871 – Thames, New Zealand
1881 – Hillgrove, New South Wales, Australia
1906 – Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Australia.
So the records are fragmented.

Was William RC?
If he was you can look here https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/
but that only has Cork and Ross Diocese, there is also Cloyne Diocese
http://registers.nli.ie/ Which can only be searched by name on some of the subscription sites.
As it's very unlikely you will find a second never mind a third Christian name on any record, you will need more than just his name and county to find the correct William Thompson.

The couple seem to be interred at Boulder Cemetery wher the record shows William to be 77 years at death.

Have you got a marriage record for him?
Yes, I have a marriage certificate but it is in New Zealand and only has his first name. Not very helpful.
