Title: Photo dating please for great Aunt, Annie Hayes
Post by: Torwoodlee on Saturday 15 October 16 21:10 BST (UK)
Hello,

Could someone please give me approximate dates of these photos?  Also, if someone can identify the military uniform of the groom in the wedding photo, I would be be appreciative.

First photo I would guess early 1930's and the uniform in the second seems to be RAF.

Think I'd go a wee bit earlier than George in the first one - say late 1920s. Agree about the RAF uniform.

My guess would 20s for the first one and 40s for the second one.

An RAF Corporal, in his best blue. No indication of trade. Can tell what he wasn't but not what he was.

Cap badge not clear enough to say whether that's King George Vl or Queen Elizabeth ll crown.

If it's WW2 she's lucky to have a wedding dress.

Someone with knowledge of RAF peaked cap history may be able to say when they were issued first so date it better. I believe the chip bag was worn most of the war then they returned at the demise of the peaked hat in late 70s or early 80s, well before 1988. :)

Thank you all for your help.  In response to the bride having a wedding dress it's because I think this was a pre WWII photo; I believe the groom was a career military man.  I have found a photo of him dated 1931 in Sudan so I believe that this photo was pre WWII.
How can you tell the difference between an army and RAF uniform and the rank according to the stripes?  I would like to learn a little more about this if anyone would be able to tell me?   :)

I'm not all that up on service uniforms but I did have 3 cousins in the RAF - I think the wing on his arm gives it away.

That is an RAF uniform, the style, the cap badge, the shirt colour looks almost white but is pale blue with black tie. Different colouring of chevrons to the army they are darker. To top it all look at the left shoulder - the RAF eagle  insignia.

This uniform was still standard uniform until the early 1970s.

OH served 25 yrs RAF to 1988 and I served 5 yrs WRAF.

Thanks so much everyone for your input.  And also, thank you for giving me the information about the uniform.   :D

The reason why I thought it might be 1940s was because the style of the hat worn by the lady in the background appears to be a 40s rather than 30s style...but I could be wrong.

Just to add to Carol's dating ~

I Have a photo of a cousin's wedding mid - late 1930s, and the bride wore a dresss like that and the bridesmaid had a hat like the one Carol refers to.
